Barolo, Italy

I spent the afternoon in Barolo country with Chris, Katja and Trisha. We first visited the town of Cherasco, where we found a small enoteca that had a few bottles of wine open for tasting. Conversing with the owner of the store was great fun, as Chris used Google translate to communicate. We asked whether it would be possible to visit any producers as the ones I had called were all busy with harvest. We were directed to La Morra to visit the Cantina Comunale, which showcases local wines. We went there and tasted a couple of wines, and again asked whether we could visit a producer. This time we were directed to Mauro Veglio, whose wife then gave us a tour of the cellars and gave us an indepth tasting through the whole production. She was very friendly and made the afternoon a special occassion.
After the tasting we headed off to Monforte to eat dinner. It was a perfect day exploring Barolo country.

2005 Mauro Veglio Barolo Vigneto Gattera
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasted at the producers. This was a more fruity wine than the Arborina, but still subtle and elegant. Had a bit of a sweet aspect to it, without actually being sweet. Very good!

2005 Mauro Veglio Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasted at the producers. This was a bit closed at the moment, but still gave a very favourable impression. Cherry and licorice on the nose and a whiff of oak, wall of tannins with nice underlying fruit. Give this a good sleep in the cellar.

2006 Mauro Veglio L'Insieme
Italy, Piedmont, Vino da Tavola
Tasted at the producers. A rather interesting blend of 40% Nebbiolo, 30% Barbera and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon! Very different to the previous wines tasted. Cassis and rasberry, very expressive on the nose. Lots of tannins and cassis and physallis on the palate. Quite nice in fact, but I did not get a bottle.
