Flight 1 - Meursaults (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Light yellow. Very shy and restrained both aromatically and on the palate. Some citrus comes through on the medium body, and it starts to become more Meursault-like after a few hours. Young with potential as demonstrated by its continuous improvement in the glass, but not really shining now.

  • 1993 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Meursault Les Narvaux

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    Golden color. A wine that did the dance between "it's oxidized" and "it's oxidized not". After prominent sulfur blows off, enticingly fresh hazelnut and clove despite the color, then showed clear oxidation, but remarkably, became fresher once again after apparently collapsing early. Truer to its Meursault origin than the younger Bouchard example. A big wine, at the end of its drinking life and not worth gambling that it will last any longer.

Flight 2 - Vosnes (3 Notes)

  • 2001 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Fairly light color. Minty, slightly stemmy nose, elegant black fruit, and crisp acidity. Good and fairly open right now if not exceptionally complex or broad.

  • 1988 Domaine Jean Tardy et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes

    Interesting. I noted this about 2 years ago and thought it was a bit skinny, but tonight, it had a pleasing element of flesh and black cherry fruit to go along with the acidity that it had then. Ascending arc of '88s or just plain old bottle variation? At any rate, I preferred the bottle tonight.

  • 1990 Domaine A.-F. Gros Richebourg

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

    The first of the 4 different Gros Richebourgs that I've tasted after purchasing them on release of this vintage. Absolutely winning nose of red and black fruits, smoke, and complex Vosne spices. One would never guess this was a 1990 until the very end of the bottle, when it began to show a bit of ripeness. Otherwise, graceful, light, and airy with terrific licorice, fruit, and acidity. Clearly the wine of the night and feminine for this climat, although wonderful flavor authority. Outstanding if not transformative. It seems as though in this case, the more severe side of Richebourg has been ameliorated by the roundness of the vintage, resulting in a mature wine with focus but not overwhelming structure.
