Introduction

Epic tasting over two nights. All wines were popped and poured on night one, then corked up for leftovers the next night. Most of these were evaluated and scored the first night with revisits the second night, but a few tagged below were only tasted on the second night. Sir Stimmel, I bow to you.

    Oily vanilla nose. Oily on the palate, lush and rich, very smooth, very nice. Long. Balanced acidity.

  • 2006 Gaja Langhe Rossj Bass 91 Points

    Crisp, not at all oaky, great balance. A bit of butter in the background. Medium+ body. Slight minerality and spice. Very impressive Chard.

  • 2006 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 92 Points

    Soft strawberry nose. Very smooth, light tannins, medium+ acidity, round body. Still a beautiful wine, but this has more heat than I remember, and is fairly hedonistic. I've been more into crisper Pinots lately. SECOND NIGHT: Same score, a little more chocolate milky. $70

  • 1986 Château Clerc Milon 91 Points

    I'm not very experienced with aged Bordeaux, so this was an interesting wine for me. Dusty nose, with a slight mustiness as if it were corked, but I don't think it was. Medium- tannins, medium acidity, light body. Smooth. No fruit or hints of sweetness left, lots of leather and dust. SECOND NIGHT: this really opened up and started singing. Lots more fruit, less dust. Fairly bright. Bumped score from an 89 to a 91.

    Awesome dusty strawberry nose. Balanced, with medium+ tannins and acidity, medium body. Red fruit dominates. Very Bordeaux.

  • 2000 Château Margaux Pavillon Rouge 95 Points

    Wine of the night for a stellar night. Huge black fruit nose. Tannic, acidic, medium+ body. So smooth! There's a slight heat, but not distracting. Huge and glorious, a touch of dust. SECOND NIGHT: Dusty red cherry nose. Lightly high-toned. So elegant. Slight dust. A little subtle. Definitely tailed off from the previous night, now a 92-pointer.

    Medicinal red fruit nose, light dust. Gritty odd mouthfeel, with a strange bitterness. Light heat. Tannic, fairly acidic, medium body. Huge, extracted, complex, but very integrated. Best with food. SECOND NIGHT: Smooth, balanced, lightly medicinal, elegant. Ready to drink. Same score.

    Crushed raspberry juice nose! Slightly pruney, too. This doesn't remind me of Pinot. Light+ tannins, acidic, medium+ body. Chocolate. Definitely some heat there.

    [Second Night] As usual, I find this overrated (96 points??) but delicious. Grass, lemon and lime on the nose, steely. Good acidity, crisp. A little fleshier than I like my SBs, but still tasty.
