Introduction

It was decided that December's tasting would be an "uptown" tasting, meaning the quality of the wines should be kicked up a notch or two above our normal tastings. The wines, as usual, are tasted double blind.

Flight 1 - I. Nonblind starter. (1 Note)

Flight 2 - II. Warm-up whites. (4 Notes)

  • 1997 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Tasted double blind. Pale yellow color. Notes of vanilla, light oak, pears, minerals and almonds. Nice fruit with a soft toast and a fairly long finish. Minerals became more evident as it warmed.

  • 2002 Peter Michael Chardonnay Point Rouge 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

Tasted double blind. Cloudy yellow color. Notes of popcorn, pear and light oak. Creamy popcorn and hazelnut flavors on the attack, wih a heavy alcoholic flavor on the finish. A bit out of whack, and could use some time.

  • 2001 Dehlinger Chardonnay 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Tasted double blind at the December Blind Drunks tasting. Waxy fruit notes, which changed character as it sat in the glass. Pear and very light oak notes. Soft oak flavors, nice minerality, and a very nice finish. Well balanced, with good fruit and acidity.

  • 2002 Keegan Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard 87 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Rich had some of this left over from the previous evening. Pale color. Slightly muted aromatics, with soft apple and oak notes. A little fruit left on the palate, with just a kiss of toasted oak. Probably much better the previous evening, this just seemed to have lost a bit overnight.

  • 1989 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted double blind at the December Blind Drunks tasting, which had an "uptown" theme. Dark garnet color. Notes of roasted red bell peppers (which I like in a wine), leather, tobacco and grilled meat. Medium bodied, with plums, blackberries and dark fruit flavors. Long finish, with chewy tannins. Enjoyable now but should continue to improve.

  • 2002 Neal Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Wykoff 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

One of our contributions to the December Blind Drunks tasting, served double blind to the group after having been decanted for about 5 hours. Inky color, almost comletely opaque all the way through. Faint tobacco notes mix with aromas of cassis and deep dark fruit. Sweet, tangy tannins on the palate, with flavors of cassis, vanilla and oak. Nicely balanced though. We took the remnants home and three days later this was at its best. Very plush, rich and velvety, and it picked up some coffee and chocolate tones. Lots of potential here.

Flight 5 - V. Nonblind dinner/dessert wines. (1 Note)

  • 1875 Barbeito Madeira Malvasia Reserva Velha 88 Points

    Portugal, Madeira

Served with assorted desserts after the blind tasting was completed. From the same bottle opened the week before. Being open for just over a week or so has done this bottle well. Notes of raisins, caramel and toffee, with a decent finish dominated by caramel and nuts. While still not mind blowing by any means, it was now at least enjoyable, having lost the harsh alcohol tones on the nose and palate.
