Introduction

Pekka brought the wines, I tasted double-blind.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2006 L'Avenir Cabernet Sauvignon 86 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    Tasted double blind, decanted for an hour. Quite a dark red to the edge. On the nose there was lots of cassis, bacon, smoke and a hint of vanilla, quite an ok nose. On the palate there was also smoke, pointing me towards South Africa immediately, but also cassis and some tannins. Quite a meaty wine, and in fact the smokiness here doesn't bother me as much as usually with S African wines. It is not so prominent. Quite a nice quaffer. 50+4+10+15+7=86

  • 2005 Bodegas El Coto Rioja Crianza 81 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

    Tasted double blind, decanted for an hour. A medium red, not very dark, not much violet on the edge. On the nose rather indistinct, some cherry, nothing disagreeable, but nothing to really latch on to. On the palate there is lingonberry, quite a bit of acidity, very little tannins. I was thinking Chianti, but it turned out to be a Spanish Crianza. Not much going on with this wine and it fell apart after a while. Not bad, but not noteworthy. 50+4+9+12+6=81

Closing

A South African wine which was quite ok and a Crianza which was a bit forgetable.
