Introduction
I see Tyrrell’s are calling the 06 semillons similar to the 05; drought years, warm conditions, wines a bit fat and ripe. I’d concur – these remind me very much of the 05s, and are considerably more rich upon release than some of the lean green affairs of the late 90s. Doubt they’ll make really old bones, but will perhaps pick up some early maturity. Intermediate drinkers, maybe. Alcohols are around 10.6%, and all wines are under screwcap.

Clean and vivid, lots of lime, and even a dash of residual sugar, I reckon. Light and ripe. A good early drinker for $16, to be fair.

Belford Semillon smelt of matchstick/sulphur, with flavours of wet limestone. Some weight on the mid-palate. It’s not so pleasant to drink now, but you buy on faith…

2006 Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1

Some fresh acid on the palate; grassy/straw fruit. It’s alright, but I’m only buying a few for interest – I think the really great Vat 1s are leaner and sharper in their youth. This is rather too flavoursome to join that club, but it’ll doubtless be good drinking for 10 years or so.

2006 Tyrrell's Vat 63

I have a bit of a weak spot for this ultra-unfashionable blend, I must say. Chablis-pure fruit with a lick of smart French oak, which seems especially obvious after tasting 4 stainless steel Semillons! Even with that richness, the acidity comes through well; this is nicely balanced, although very young.

2006 Tyrrell's Chardonnay Vat 47

Buttery nose, warm soft palate. No malo? Hard to believe – it really was a warm vintage! Cashew and fig fruit on the palate, good balance – just a bit loose-knit for me though, especially at $30.

2005 Tyrrell's Pinot Noir Vat 6

Murray’s Folly. Pale garnet, there are overt sour cherry aromas dominated by green stalkiness. Dry and bitter. Iconoclastic wine let down by a rather short finish. Not for me.

2003 Tyrrell's Shiraz Brokenback

A clean nose, rich and powerful with dark ironbark fruit. Rich and tannic, some oakiness, weight on the front palate. Modern Hunter style. Not too fruity. Still very young, despite the extra few years.

2005 Tyrrell's Shiraz Vat 9

Cherry/dusty fruit aromas, fine powdery tannins. Only mid-weight on the palate, cleanish, but otherwise typical Vat 9, medium-long finish. Not especially interesting at this age, but should develop nicely. The only wine of the whole tasting still under cork, a consequence of hand-bottling cask-by-cask; although I’m told that consistency is assured by rack & returns prior to bottling. (Having said that, I gather it’s not all bottled at once, so there could be miniscule differences between batches).

2005 Tyrrell's Vat 8

The Cabernet is Mudgee-sourced, and although it only makes up 10% of the wine its presence is clearly felt. Ripe blackcurrant, dark chocolate & coffee aromas initially, texture is velvety. Big wine, but not overblown. 14%, if memory serves. Pretty good.

2005 Tyrrell's Cabernet Sauvignon Vat 70 Mudgee Estate

The last vintage of the all-Mudgee cabernet. Tight, closed tannic. Iron & blackcurrant. All arms & legs, but balance is good. Warm solid finish.
