Introduction
This was Jim's swan song Intro/Retro as he is shipping off to Ohio for the foreseeable future. Sad to see him go!
The tasting was fun and educational as usual, though the theme was extremely difficult to pick up and not knowing made the tasting that much more challenging. Jim's idea was to pour 10 distinct different varietals. In theory (and retrospect) this should not be terribly difficult to identify, but in practice tasting blind it was hard for everyone. As a result, the rankings were probably a bit more varied that even is usual, but hey, that's part of the fun.
All wines tasted (double) blind.
2001 Johann Schwarz Rot 91 Points

Group #3, My #6 - Medium light red color. Wow, great nose of spicy black liquer and spice. Juicy deep red liquer fruit with a lightly canned note on the palate. 91+ pts.

Group #8, My #9 - Pale crimson color. Dusty nose of black fruit with clove, cumin, and acidic notes - odd. Sour canned bitter red fruit on the palate. Some life left here, but nothing very interesting.

Group #1, My #8 - an obvious disconnect with the group here - I may have slightly underrated it early, but no way was this WOTN for me. Opaque red/purple color. Forward nose of black cassis liquer with a bit of bretty stink. Big concentrated juicy black fruit on the palate - structured and still a bit bitter on the finish.

Group #6, My #4 - Full red color. Wow - SCREAMING nose of green bell pepper with red fruit underneath. Medium bodied red fruit on the palate with the green pepper note carrying through. Still rather nice.
