Introduction

Wow what an evening! Great food and company to match. Thanks to all for their generosity.

Flight 1 - Aperitif, served before food (2 Notes)

  • NV Villa Sparina Gavi Brut 86 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Gavi

Medium gold color with reticent nose of bitter almond. Dry, and nutty with hints of peach pit. Nice mousse; medium finish. A tad one-dimensional, but refreshing. Cortese grape make a nice change for a sparkling wine.

  • 1996 Henriot Champagne Brut Millésimé 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Pale yellow with a buttery nose. Bright acidity with lemon and mineral predominating. Rather aggressive mouse. Bracing and probably would go better with food than as an aperitif. Still very youthful.

Flight 2 - White wine flight, preceded by amuse bouch of cauliflower soup (3 Notes)

Sauternes served to those who ordered foie gras. Returned with the dessert course.

  • 2004 Fernand & Laurent Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Pale yellow with mushrooms on the nose. Very mineral driven with flavors of wet rocks and a hint of oak. Soft in the mouth, if not especially complex with a slightly hot finish.

  • 1989 Château Guiraud 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Deep gold in color with a reticent nose. The color is the best thing about this wine. I tasted this back in 1999 and gave it an 85 so my reactions are pretty consistent. This lacks the acid/botrytis balance that I look for in a really great Sauternes. Muddy flavors and generally unimpressive.

  • 2003 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage Blanc Chevalier de Sterimberg 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Gold color with reticent nose. Flavors of wet cardboard; lacks the exotic spiciness of the Marsanne/Rousanne grape varieties. Finishes a little hot.

Flight 3 - Pinot Noir flight (4 Notes)

Flight 4 - Syrah/Shiraz flight (3 Notes)

  • 2002 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Say what you will about these juicy Aussie Shirazes, this wine is pretty seductive. Full bodied with a long finish.

  • 2005 Martinelli Syrah Terra Felice 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Inky black in the glass. This is a MONSTER wine; weighty with gobs of sweet black fruits. Not shy and maybe not for everyone; screams Cali Syrah.

  • 2005 Hobbs Shiraz Gregor 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Range

Smoky and complex with layers of dark fruit flavors. Impressive
