This was a pop and pour. Wonderful nose of dark dark red fruit, spices , petrichor, and a little dark cherry. Drank over the next two hours and I was surprised at how forward this wine was. Ten years is usually a good time to have a look into a wine's evolution, and I am glad I tried this bottle now. With that said I think the bottle is in a middling stage. Its softness surprised me, but as I drank it, I noticed the nice tannic backbone. Very soft, sweet, luscious( for Granbussia), with very typical Barolo notes. Although today, the wine is quite enjoyable, it is not an intellectually compelling wine. However, I do believe that with another ten or so years, one might really be rewarded with a complex and very compelling wine. Sorry to be all over the place here.

This wine was also opened and re-corked for four hours. I was a little turned off by the funky( not taint or brett) harshness, at the initial opening and four hours later. It smelled too much of scorched earth, overripeness, and slightly over-roasted coffee beans. There are some volatile red fruits jumping from the glass. In the mouth the wine is very red fruited, tart, and backed by some oily minerals. I certainly don't think this wine is flawed( this is the second bottle that has behaved exactly the same) but it is not my cup of tea. The 2001 regular BdM from Valdicava blew this wine away from all aspects.

Damn this bottle got my attention quickly. I opened the bottle four hours before my Bolognese would be ready. The nose was so nice instantly with aromas of tangy earthy Italian clay, and impressive blue and red fruit, dusty deep rich slate and chalk minerals. The initial taste had gripping bright red and black fruit, and something that just screamed Italy. I put the cork back in and waited four hours.
This wine just would not quit. Over the night the wine came a little more into focus, shed its sappy grip, and became a balanced, large, wonderfully rich and bright, food friendly beauty. I drank nearly the whole bottle.
