Pinot and Chardonnay but not necessarily Burg

Excellent night with great company. As wine geekish as any wine dinner can get. Dinner in honour for Jean-Pierre Renard and his wife.
Interesting array of taiwanese fine cuisine to pair off with the wines.

Extremely different but amazingly from the same village!

• 1995 Domaine Matrot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chalumeaux 85 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

  Cucumbers, kaya toast , dash of curry spices and nutty. Wow! Lovely bright, lemon minerality finsihing with chrsanthamum flower tea. Quite full bodied and just a tad bit reductive soy.

• 2006 J.M. Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 83 Points

  Fresh yellow stonefruits, slightly smoky. A young fresh style with minerality and bitter pith. Got lots of hay on the palate and sweet pungent flowers. A bit of a middle weight but needing more time.

Both chards doing very well with the aussie holding its own against burgs.

• 2008 Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 86 Points

  A bountiful bouquet of flowers, melons and some muskiness. A well defined wine with crisp acidity but maintaining nice roundness. Delicate with chockful of chalky minerality. Suprisingly aromatic for such a young wine and I suspect the lovely acid and minerality will carry it through for a few years. Exceptional for a village.

• 2007 Picardy Chardonnay 84 Points

  Elegantly balanced young wine with some minerality and ripe lemons. Some vanillin and sweetness but very well balanced with clean crsipness . A well rounded wine. Excellent showing for a new world.

An educational experience with dead or almost dead wines.

  Not as interesting as the previous bottle had. There seems to be bottle variation.This one had lots of wet mushrooms and wet sawdust. Fishy and somewhat oxidised too. Still having some acid to lift it. This is like lemons in a hot car. Interesting though.

• 1973 Maison Champy Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières

  Very caramelised and oxidised honeysuckle and lots of soy mixed in. Essence of chicken and satly. Dead but archaelogically educational. Unscorable .

Both very forwardly styled and modern.

  Dried flowers, stewed tea leaves, artificial indian incense and cigarette ash. Lacks acidity with mostly sweet cherries. Interesting though and my first slovenian.

The Stonier matched up and beat all of its famous compatriots from burg.

  Lovely pinot from the new world that was as burg as any could get. This has depth, length and density of understated fruits. Leathery, floral with some capsicums. Lovely wine.

  Herbaceous, vegetal but still showing pretty ripe starawberry fruits. Gingseng roots and brambles in the finish.

  Coffee and ash tray. Oaky and sweet with really ripe black cherries. Quite forward.
