Introduction

Very nice afternoon, 17 producer on 20 of the Consorzio were present. Tasted 21 between Rufina and Riserva. Location was perfect, but almost nothing to pair with (only bread and some ham). Of course, my tasting capacities were going down with time (and wine tasted..). NOTES REFER STRICTLY TO TASTED BOTTLE!! Description same order as tasted.

Flight 1 - Rufina (10 Notes)

1 year ageing, 12% alc.

  • 2007 Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rùfina 78 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Rùfina

Pale ruby red, with brick-red rim; not very appealing seems almost passed. Medium smell, with flowery notes (wild rose) and fruity (red fruits) then some unpleasant note (game, fur). Dry, tannic and after all equilibrated, also if some acidity is missing. Intense, persistent and medium fine taste. TWA 88; 13,5%

Closing

Very good quality in the average. A special mention to Grignano, Frescobaldi and Colognole that were the most interesting producer. Most of the wines were just realesed (a bit too young). There are 3 main types of soil in Rufina's zone: calcareous, clayey and sandy/gravel...it seems that this partition is giving no result in the wine and that the enologist's touch is heavier and more significant than the cru imprint. Good exception is Grignano "Poggio Gualtieri".
Following here I add a grid using the 50+5+15+20+10 scale, compared with my scale using AIS method (number on the left).
