W Squared

Apparently a top secret tasting society has been operting in the deep jungles of SE Asia. Wine Wankers is a loose group of nut cases spearheaded by Simmy B a wine dealer in the capital city who pontificate weekly over the drop. It appears to this TWATS Member and self appointed scribe that the group has potnetial, but further deep study is requireed so I will be partaking in as many tastings as possible to further acertain their DNA. Memers in attendance at this blind were Ponti, Sim, David, Brian, Patrick, Rohan and yours truly.

Most of the wines were given a few hours of breathing time and decanted. Great location Vin+ with host Ponti directing staff and helping with the food which was great.

• 2005 Louis Jadot Corton-Grèves

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

  Light strawberry color, nose reticent, but floral. Greenness in there as well, green pepper. Pinot? But not stinky enough. Big tart fruit, balanced, resolved, not deep but lingering, strawberry fruit, raspberries, with a bit of stink on the palate, something like licking the feet of pigs, but in a good way. Bunch of green herbs and a bit of fresh sliced green pepper on the palate as well. Definitely an interesting wine. Simmy’s wine and we got pretty close on this as a Burgundy.

• 2003 Cullen Wines Diana Madeline Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

  Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

  Slightly purple with brick at the edge. Bit of funk on the shy nose. Tannins, oak there, leather, big stuff, lingering, austere. Acid there on the finish as well. This baby has time. Interesting wine as the fruit is not huge, but it is not French, a tough one for all of us but we get close. Part of Brian’s “theme” for the night.

• 2004 Gralyn Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

  Dark, but not extracted. Nice big nose, kind of like “she is lifting her skirt, bending over and giving a peek”. Tannins are tight, big fruit wave, oak, oak, maybe a bit much for my palate, then the creamy Vanilla factor comes in. Once I had a bite of spiced Lamb somosa this really balanced out. Nice. Another one related to Brian’s theme and became my favorite, regardless of the oak treatment. Believe that Simmy nailed this one down to the winery, damn that girl is good.

• 2005 Woodlands Margaret

  Nice translucent ruby color. “Octane 92” on the nose. Big & funky as well. Perfume like, beautiful sexy, can just smell this for 10 minutes as a taste may spoil it. Good big front palate, lingers on the mid, not deep. Bit of Ouzo in there. Delicate, fades like a beautiful sunset, leave ya with a smile. Refined, nice effort. We had no clue where this hailed from. Rohan stumps the room.

• 2006 Duemani Syrah Costa Toscana Suisassi

  Italy, Tuscany, Costa Toscana

  Bit opaque, purple. “Promises more thrills than anything tonight”. Mocha, molasses, silky tannins, licorice, hedonistic. Not a bomb, not syrupy, but alch is there, tannins, nice…. This one is a double swallow deep finish, excellent effort.

• 2004 François Villard Saint-Joseph Reflet

  France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

  Translucent, almost a touch of orange, but not mature. Funk, white pepper, lots of it. Rohan wants to sneeze. I am getting some pig farm action. French all the way. Sweet licorice, somewhere between the black & red kind. Also get some fuel oil notes buried as secondary nose & flavors. We all like ooh and ahh for this one. Clearly some maniacal wine making going on here. My wine, Ponti’s suggestion, well done. Simmy nailed the wine maker, how des she do it? Perhaps too much time in the “small room”.

• 2005 Whitsend Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

  Darkest wine of the night. According to Rohan “it smells like my underwear after 2 days of workout”. Call me sick, but I kinda like it. Blood, meat, like walking into a butcher shop after the full cow has been mangled. Kinda like earning your Red Wings at a Harley Davidson initiation party. Green bitter tannins, like a fresh born Doe with shaky legs. Get some Jolly Rancher grape hard candy on the palate, licorice, and big blue fruit. Some thoughts this may be bretty, but seemed to blow off to me after a while in the glass.

A treat of a night, realy interesting wines with a wide range of locals served up, and fun & challenging to mind & palate as we tried to guess grape, country & local. Some reasonable sucess this night for all, even down to a winery nailed by Co-hostess with the mostess Simmy B. Well done.
