Lunch at Herve Ferand's fabulous Le Beaulieu restaurant. This was surprisingly good. Very attractive. perfumed nose of high-toned red-berries, cassis, flowers and spice, along with some muddy earthy and a touch of rubber sap, Rather easy and lightweight on the palate, not great complexity either, but it was wonderfully balanced, with high-toned fragrance of red fruits, berries and spice weighed down by a little earthiness and a nice silky texture. Finish was a touch short, with a hint heat and bittersweet herbs, but very plesant in the way it gently dissipated at the back palate. Very pleasant indeed, and paired nicely with a seared beef tenderloin.

Bought from Wine Gallery at the Bangkok Emporium, drank with tons of truffles at Zanotti. Absolutely fabulous. Wonderful nose, with, springy, mossy earth, incense, wood spice, smoke, cherries. Amazing complexity and depth, opening up even more with time in the decanter to show perfumed flowers, maraschinos, porcini mushrooms and a hint of espresso grounds. Drop-dead gorgeous. Palate with really very tight at first, only hitting its stride after an hour in the decanter, but it was superbly good when it did flesh out. No ultra-ripe, super-sweet modern stylings here. Instead, we got a medium-weight wine wrapped in a package of superb poise and perfect balance. Not to say it was weak - there was tons of depth, concentration and complexity with lovely, integrated flavours of sweet, ripe red cherries, ferrous mineral, some smoke, menthol and spice, all sappy and delicious, and clinging to the mouth. The lovely long finish just slides down the mouth in a silky glide of sweet, melted tannins. A joyful wine. Drinking beautifully now, but it still has some upside to it.
