Introduction

These are my notes from Bruce Cass's fantastic course on Fundamentals of Taste and Smell. The first day included a lot of doctored wines, not included here.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

The Olallieberry was probably the most interesting, never tried a berry wine before. Good, but I think I like other sweet wines better. The Riesling was fantastic, and cements my belief that I will eventually be buying a lot of Riesling. The Barolo was simply too young.

  • 2007 Henri Bourgeois Sancerre Les Baronnes 86 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

    From a 375. Yellow colored, quite deep. Nose was light, refreshing, earthy. Clean, not musty. Structure had lots of acid. Palate was minerally with gunflint, possibly too much acid. Had a bit of an unpleasant aftertaste.

  • 2004 Hessische Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach Steinberger Riesling Kabinett 91 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

    Yellow colored, darker than straw but not gold. Very sweet petrol nose with lots of fruit. Structure was very balanced with tension between acidity and sweetness. Palate was enjoyable with a long aftertaste. Excellent.

  • NV Chaucer's Olallieberry 87 Points

    USA, California

    Color was quite deep red. Aroma was very intense with blueberries and boisenberries. Palate also had huge berries but was balanced, not cloying or too acidic. Would go well with dessert, esp cheesecake. A bit of bitterness on the finish that is a small turnoff. Finish is a minute or more.

  • 2003 Azelia Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Color was reddish brown. Aroma had lots of fruit and a bit of wood, reminded me of Bordeaux. Palate was overwhelming with the tannin. This wine is not even close to ready, at least 5 more years. Not enjoyable today. Score reserved this time around.

  • 2005 Storrs Petite Sirah Santa Cruz Mountains 86 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    Color: Purple-black, intense and dark. Nose: Whiff of asphalt, some white pepper. Palate has balanced tannins. Good fruits and a medium-long finish, nothing special.
