Gramercy Tavern NYC
Tasted Sunday, November 8, 2009 by RajivAyyangar with 364 views
We sat on the far right side of the bar. Beautiful setting. Beautiful day.
Drinks:
05 Kiralyudvar Tokaji Sec
Bitter Lemon Soda, Fever Tree, England - great lemon + quinine. A good drink, but not abundantly REAL.
Me:
Heirloom Cauliflower
Capers, Raisins and Almonds
-slightly blackened and Al Dente - a bit tough to cut, but oh-so-delicious.
Maddy:
Calamari & Carrot Salad
Toasted Pine Nuts and Preserved Lemon Vinaigrette
-Really well-balanced sauce. The lemon was real and tasty. Maddy's favorite dish of the night.
Drinks:
NV Billecart-Salmon Champagne.
Ginger Swizzle: Ginger Beer, Mint, Lime - fresh mint leaves...and it showed. Deliciously real!
Me:
Sea Bass
Spaghetti Squash, Walnuts and Sherry Sauce
-Sauce seemed slightly curry-like. The fish was salty, but the relatively unsalted squash below was a perfect foil. The fish had some fried skins underneath that were really tasty and fishy, in contrast with the meatier, cleaner flavors of the main fish on top. Delicious.
Maddy:
Seafood & Kabocha Squash Chowder
Mussels and Glazed Kohlrabi
-The seafood was cooked perfectly, but the broth was a revelation. Light, buttery, perfectly balanced, homey, comfortable. Dish of the night, I think.
Cheese:
Epoisses -Perfect temperature. Beautiful golden orange/rust rind.
Pecorino Oro Antico -Very well aged. Not salty. Buttery, complex, and delicious.
Bleu (don't remember what, something starting with a Q) -A medium-strength blue. Perfectly in balance with the others. medium complexity. Med- sharpness.
Dessert:
Warm Apple Crisp
Vanilla Ice Cream
-ice cream had a chip on top - thin apple slice. Perfectly light, crunchy, melt-in-your-mouth, and super tart. Amazing. The ice cream had exquisite vanilla flavor. And the crisp was good - apples still had some crunch. We both agreed the apple chip was something special.
2005 Királyudvar Furmint Tokaji Sec 83 Points
Hungary, Tokaji
Brilliant gold in the glass, this wine had a slightly oxidative nose of sweet apples. In the mouth it was round, medium-bodied, with medium acidity, soft dessert-wine-like flavors, and a faint touch of residual sugar. Could use more acidity, but I enjoyed the layers of flavor and aged-quality to the nose. 83-85. Might have been opened too long.
