    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Palest straw. Lovely nose, white flowers, mineral, very fragrant despite being served too cold. Very mineral, chalky finish, stoney even with great precision. Long. Lovely. ****

  • 2001 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Served blind. Quite tight on th enose, some spice, almost earthy. Interesting flavvour of marzipan on the finish. Whatever oak is well judged and nicely integrated though. A fuller, richer style than the Roulot, and a sense more weight and alcohol but nicely done and somewhere on the Cote d'Or I think. ****

    Mid garnet. Lovely nose of wild strawberry and cherry. The finer points of this lost in my cold. ****

  • 2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Mid garnet. Similar light, floaty nose as the Remy with a bit more meatiness coming through. Sweet, meaty fruit on the attack, cherry, lovely but still quite tight. ***(*1/2)

  • 1994 Domaine Leroy Latricières-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Served blind. Far fuller colour, mid ruby and semi-opaque. Slightly porty, sweet nose, very ripe. Medium density but finishes with quite drying tannins. Guessed 1990 based on the ripeness on the nose, but should have seen the tannins weren't very 1990. A glossy producer in a leaner vintage. ***

    Still quite taut and tight. Raspberry fruit. Nose seems a little more lifted and volatile. This will be ok I think but as usual, needs time. **(*)

  • 2005 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée 3.14

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

    Served blind. Far darker and fuller than the Mazis, more cherry-led nose. Good, lush, plush fruit, long, lovely. **** When revealed it's clear that it's benefited from the extra year in bottle cf the last one of these I tasted at the 2008 Beauj Offline.

    Lovely nose, sweet, bacon fat. Quite a precise attack, good line, finishes with good acidity. Rounds out in the middle to a lush exuberance. Mmmm. ****1/2

  • 1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Lovely fruit-dominated nose. Seems quite pure. Sweet fruit on the attack, still quite primary and a good thwack of warmth on the finish ***(*)

  • 1986 Château Gruaud Larose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Cedar, casis, a touch of Cordier brett. Starting to open up a bit but still quite taut. Reveals a touch of sweetish fruit after a while in the glass. A wine to decant and follow over an evening. Proper claret but never going to be showy in a crowd ***(*1/2)

    Served blind. Claret bottle. Similar left-bank nose and palate to the GL. Cleaarly has it all there but needs time. **(**)

  • 1999 Domaine de la Grange des Pères Pays d'Hérault

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Pays d'Hérault

    Served blind. Rhone bottle. Full, deep red. Distinctive nose of peaanuts in their shells. Sweet fruit on the attack. Good but this won't be to everyone's taste. Something I'd like to revisit without a cold. ***1/2

    Light to mid gold. Lush, coconut-edge to the fruit. Seems a little lighter than previously. Botrytis on the finish. Lovely wine and oh so drinkable. ****1/2

  • 1976 Château Rieussec

    Amber colour. More orange and marmelade cf the 03. Some sweetness on the attack but less so in the middle. More a wine to consider as an aperitif or with foie gras etc than anything sweeter I think. Good, but I prefer the lush 03. ***1/2
