Introduction

We made our last trip of the year to Cal Poly Pomona's Hospitality Management program's restaurant with a smaller than normal group but no less lively. Again the instructors/managers were happy to see us and hang out. Their students get a little more wine education on the nights we visit. They also set aside some bottles form their cellar which includes a lot of donated bottles that they allow us to cherry pick from time to time. We struck pay dirt this time with the Shafer. Great find and doing very well. The only negative was 3 corked bottles but being that we had our normal 2-3 bottles a person it really doesn't hurt that much.

  • 2007 Selbach-Oster Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Screw Cap. Some reductive sulfur aromas greet which actually increase over 3 days. Terrific mineral core runs through this with cherry and lime wrapped around it. Slight tingle on the finish and cleanly integrated sugar. Terrific wine under the aromas we've been warned about from screw caps. This wine would have a long bright future but my other bottles won't stay around very long due to the closure. Love the palate.

  • 2006 Cabot Vineyards Syrah Kimberly's

    USA, California, North Coast, Humboldt County

    Nose showing smoked meats with a good dose of bacon and some raspberry. Bright berry palate that is still primary with plenty of fruit expression but not too thick. Lot's of bacon flavor and a solid tannic grip. I think this will be best a few more years in bottle but very good potential.

  • 2000 Bressler Cabernet Sauvignon

    The nose still shows lots of primary fruit with a touch of heat coming out in the glass. The palate also shows a very young character with primary raspberry like flavors and some heat.

  • 2005 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Botella

    USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

    Though the nose seems a bit tight this is immediately identifiable as SRH with the slight pine type of note similar yet clearly different from Sonoma Coast. Lean feeling palate that seems to fall off a bit at the end. Touch of heat on nose and palate. This could have needed some more air.

  • 1979 Franciscan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

    Funky musty nose. Shows some sweetness late in the palate with notes of chocolate. Chunky and all around for me but surprisingly lively for a time. It died fairly quickly though.

  • 1989 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    This is actually a Stag's Leap wine. Nose shows a older character but still very alive with chocolate a distinct smell of a vintage Port.....but not "porty". Rich and very strongly fruited showing some coffee. Lots of tannin here still. I would have guessed Merlot probably blind. Very nice and holding up really well.
    89% - Cab S, 6% - Merlot, 5% - Cab Franc

  • 1979 Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Single Vineyard Alexander's Crown Vineyard Flawed

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley

    Clearly old on the nose with some cedar peaking through. Clean and light and again clearly older but not very oxidized. This was a bit puzzling in how it showed. It didn't come off as over the hill but was inexpressive. A whif later on revealed some TCA clearly up the mystery. Corked!

  • 1992 Warre Porto Colheita

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    Young seeming and on the tart side. Not as nutty as I normally expect from an aged Colheita. Bottled in 2005.
