Introduction
Recent Barolos and Barbarescos from La Morra, Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga, Neive, and Barbaresco. All bottles had been recently opened.
2004 Marcarini Barolo Brunate 92 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Poured at a retailer tasting. Sweet nose of menthol and candied cherries. Tannins still dominate in the mouth. A very nice Barolo, and well priced. A bit one dimensional as compared to the competition on this day -- but the competition was twice the price.

2004 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste 94 Points

Poured at a retailer tasting. Everything I like about '04 -- waves of sweet black fruit on the nose, unbelievably smooth tannins at this point, with a long, long finish.

2004 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato

Poured at a retailer tasting. This was a showing a bit tight, with aromatics of cherry, leather, earth and a touch of flowers. Very well balanced with supple tannins. More cherry and earth on the finish. Probably closed down a bit and flashing only hints of what is in store. Too difficult to rate, but much to look forward to.

2004 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra

Poured at a retailer tasting. Very dark for a Barolo. Big nose with cherries, plenty of spices, an organic aromatic component that I love, and some oak. Tannins definitely dry your mouth out and needs time to put itself together. Long, long finish with lots of earth and mushrooms. Definitely big and bold, and definitely needs time. Too young to rate.

2005 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia 95 Points

Poured at a retailer tasting. Reasonably open nose with sweet aromatics with roses, cherries, and spices. Wonderfully balanced with amazingly smooth tannins at this point in its life. Long, long finish with roses, cherries and earth. A superb Barolo.

2005 Cantina del Pino Barbaresco Albesani 93 Points

Poured at a retailer tasting. Very nice nose with sweet spicy cherries and hints of organic aromatics that I love -- a very pretty nose. Well balanced with very smooth tannins and surprisingly open. Usually like this producer, love this new Barbaresco.

Poured at a retail tasting. Another good showing for this Barbaresco. Nice nose of flowers and candied black cherries. Very well balanced with round tannins and a delicious and long earthy finish.
