Flight 1 - Flight 1 (3 Notes)

Started out with a bang!

  • 1997 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    WOTN, hands down. Intensely petrol-filled, but with ample honeyed notes to stabilize it, The palate had a thickness and intense weight initially that smoothed through the midpalate/finish. Delectable.

  • 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 88 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    dirty nose, stinky even. Kind of a thin, fast finish, this still had more presence and taste to it than many rieslings at the tasting. My #2 of the night. It came right after the 1997 Auslese, which didn't do it any favors.88-89

  • 2006 Nikolaihof Riesling Federspiel Vom Stein

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    nose: floral, mineral, I guessed alsacian
    palate: viscouse yet fully dry, this was hard to evaluate after the JJ Prums. Lemon dirt and smoky apple finish was definitely interesting. I'd like to try this again in different company.

Flight 2 - Flight 2 (3 Notes)

Possibly the worst flight in all of my tastings to date.

  • 2006 Bott-Geyl Les Pinots d'Alsace Metiss

    France, Alsace

    This snuck into the riesling tasting with no one the wiser. It didn't fare too well, though. the nose gave hints of sweetness which were completely lacking in the palate. Many thought it might be flawed, and I did not have a chance to retaste after the unveiling. no score.

  • 2006 Trefethen Dry Riesling 80 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District

    This was merely OK. Barely drinkable, it was in a flight with a badly corked bottle and a non-riesling. Still, its performance was barely adequate, if that.

Flight 3 - Flight 3 (3 Notes)

Recovery, but only barely.

  • 2006 Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling Indian Wells 86 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    This was passable, but after the second flight of awesome dissapointments, my note-taking dropped off precipitously.
    nose: bruised pineapple
    palate: half dry, half sweet, this seemed to be confused and yet simple and grapey at the same time. Best of the flight, 3rd overall (to give some indication of the quality of the entrants in the tasting!)86-87

  • 2006 Hugel Gentil "Hugel"

    again, a non-riesling in the blind riesling tasting (who invited my brother, anyway??)
    this was almost herbal, with some sulphur stink. No residual sugar to speak of, which now seems natural, at the time it was jarring.

  • 2006 Poonawatta Estate Riesling The Eden 79 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

    I did not like this. It had a skunky nose, with simple green apples and very little personality or depth. Pass.
