Introduction

Edmund called me late on Friday afternoon for a casual drink at Otto. We were joined by Matt and Michelle. What an excellent evening tipple though - two top notch wines including my first Passito. I did not expect either one of them to be that good, but they were both superb.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    An excellent wine. Like much of what Vogüé produces, you must like the style with all its rich fruit, but no denying the quality. Very impressive nose, extremely expressive with kirsch, maraschino, dark cherries, plums, laced with bramble, peppery spice, cloves, anise, sandlewood, roasted green peppers and underlaid with earth and ferrous mineral. Even more impressive on the palate. Again, rich, sappy and big, with opulent kirsch and stewed cherry flavours. Perfect balance though, with great clean acidity, fine ripe tannins and pure, pure fruit expressions. Finish was very long and intense, with great freshness to the very end. Drinking yummily at the moment, but this is quite a monster wine for a 2001 and needs quite a few more years to integrate and develop past all that primary fruit. Very, very good though.

  • 2006 Donnafugata Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé 94 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Passito di Pantelleria

    My very first Passito, and this was incredibly good. Beautiful orangey amber colour. Entrancing nose of musky white flowers - osmanthus and chrysantemum - paired with tangerins, orange peel and just the most perfumed dried apricot scents. Really good on the palate too. Unusual, but completely addictive flavours of lychee cream, rose petals, orange peel and apricots. Lovely creamy texture, and a great fresh balance to its sweetness so that it was light on its feet in spite of having a real rich lushness. Shortish finish was the only let down to an otherwise extremely classy, suave wine. Even then, it went down beautifully, with a glide of fruit and flowers at the very end. This knocked my socks off - especially with a Gorgonzola Dolce. Must get more of this!
