    Hungary, Tokaji

    Lovely bright old gold colour; fresh orange and marmelade nose. Fresh attack, lovely orange fruit, very sweet but gorgeous acidity; perfect poise. ****1/2

  • 2008 Mullineux Chenin Blanc Straw Wine

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland

    Deeper, more mid-amber than the Diz 99. Nose dominated by VA - very acetone. Very sweet, less obvious acidity than the Tokaji though it must have a fair amount and a slightly caramel finish. Again pretty well balanced but the nose puts me off somewhat. Still very good though. ****

  • 1986 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Flawed

    Flat nose. A touch of wood on the attack. i think this has a little TCA. Chewy 86 tannins without the fruit it should have to balance. Off.

  • 1988 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    Deep, dense, coffee-scented nose. Dark red, near-opaque. Cedar and tobacco on the palate. Very proper 88. Lovely. ****1/2

  • 1990 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Lighter than the 88 Baron. Deep ruby. Lovely nose, velvety fruit and a touch of tobacco. A floaty, ethereal quality to the nose. Light for the vintage and lightens further in the glass though the fruit rounds out and becomes really quite sweet. Very pleasing and pretty wine though lacks complexity and a bit of stuffing. Finishes a little dilute. Top ***

  • 1995 Château d'Armailhac

    Tobacco and muted blackcurrant on the nose. A little cool and muted. Quite dusty, densely-fruited, savoury and dry. Good but needs another 5 years on this showing. ***(1/2)

  • 2006 Destiny Bay Magna Praemia

    New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Waiheke Island

    Mid to deep ruby. Quite elegant nose, red fruit and some sweet vanilla. Mid weight, lovely balance, very smooth. Moderate length. This is really nice. May lack a bit of complexity and is certainly trading on its sweetly oaked fruit but it's very well made and seamlessly smooth. Sits somewhere between the new world and the old for me. ****

    Sweet, porty, slightly volatile nose that settles down after a few minutes. Beautifully sweet and balanced palate. Really lovely. ****1/2
