Introduction

Had a few bottles with Matt the day before New Year's Eve. Good times.

  • NV Alfred Gratien Champagne Brut 83 Points

    France, Champagne

    the nose on this showed some funkiness, like a musty note. lots of lemons too, but there's this underlying smell of like musty grapes. not corked, not really offensive, but i don't know if i like it either. on the palate this is creamy with high acid and some good mineral, lemon zest and sea salt flavors. the palate is nice and the finish is decent, but overall it just didn't do it for me.

    medium purple color with lots of sediment. good thing this was decanted! the nose was great right away, but got even more expressive with time. lots of plush rasberry fruit, cedar, vanilla bean and some pipe tobacco on the nose. the palate is so silky. i love the balance of this wine: medium acid, sweet, rich tannins and great flavors: red licorice, earth, plums, cedar. very well structured with a silky finish. man this would be good with something like grilled squab. for some reason i want lamb schwarma with this too.

    tooch and i are on the same page with this one. golden color and viscous in the glass. right away, even chilled, the aromatics on this wine pop out of the glass and seduce you, and, yes, you like it. you get honeycomb, melon, white peach nectar on the nose. this wine just caresses your palate with its creamy richness, but it's got such well-balanced acid that you just keep sipping at it. the flavors are superb: honeycomb cereal, white peach, dried apricot, fresh marmalade. yumm. i love loire dessert wines and this is up there with the best i've had in recent years. the richness, the acid, the flavors, the drinkability and the sexy finish on this wine rock you.
