A survey of Italian wines
The Barolo was the class of the tasting, but the Chianti, Barbaresco, and Vina Nobile also performed well. Some disappointments among the lighter reds.
2008 Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio 86 Points

light with nice acidity. flavors of pear, roux, and citrus. short, crisp, finish.

strange flavor profile -- reminded me of korean barley tea or breakfast cereal (wheaties).

nice bright candied cherry palate is spot on for a chianti. the medium tannins were better than expected. A nice wine.

2006 Antica Corte Ripasso della Valpolicella Classico Superiore 87 Points
Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Ripasso della Valpolicella Classico Superiore
nice blend of red and black fruit on the palate. The Ripasso really did a nice job with this, making it much more expressive and structured on the palate than I typically expect from a base Valpolicella. Still, fairly light tannins reveal the underlying lack of strength.

2004 Poggio alla Sala Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva 89 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
very nice red fruit profile with light floral notes. medium tannins. I think this is as good as it will get, but it is a nice wine today.

2001 Torregiorgi Barbaresco 89 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
blackberry liqueur dominates the palate of this. The medium tannins leave this with a surprisingly light bodied feel. medium finish.

2005 Vietti Barolo Castiglione 92 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
The class of the tasting (although some hated the tar notes). Really excellent. A hint of orange already starting to show around the rim. Floral, tar, and black fruit. medium(+) tannins. Got better as it opened up even further.
