Rib Roast and Napa Cabs

Introduction

We paired Napa Cabs with a huge standing rib roast, raindow chard, and mashed yukon golds. We finished with a huge cheese board and some chocolates. A good time was had by all. No broken glasses. One broken plate.

  • 2005 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 91 Points

    Accidentally pulled the 2005 instead of the 2000. Rats. Nice fruit and good structure, but nowhere near ready. Fatal misstep. HAd the remainder of the bottle on Day 3 and didn't feel like as big of a bonehead. Mellowed and open, the wine displayed a lot more game-like flavors considering its varietal. Very good and can't wait to get to the 2000. Not sure if Insignia is worth the money after this experience.

    Excellent. Lots of sweet cedar and balance made this one a real hit of the night. Drinking perfectly right now. Why tempt fate - drink and be rewarded for your patience. Had with a rib roast and good friends.

    This is finally where it's supposed to be. Old world style wearing Napa fruit with bottle age. Amazing perfume and almost perfectly balanced. Definitely would have held its own with any great Bordeaux. Tannins were perfect.

  • 2005 Lamborn Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage III Proprietor Grown 91 Points

    A huge effort. Still a bit tight for me, but the wine shows incredible potential - likely as intended by Ms. Barrett. Good classic cab flavor and color. Had the tailings on Day 3 and the wine was wonderfully mellowed. Big huge blue fruit flavors.

    Excellent. Lots of bright fruit, but balanced with some skunky funk. This was one of the clear winners. This one would be extremely interesting to see in another year or so.
