Introduction

I always try to stop by the Winery Collective in SF to sample their large selection of small production California wines. It's really a great place to spend the afternoon in SF.

  • 2006 Robert Stemmler Pinot Noir Nugent Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Ripe cherry, with a little funk on the nose. Very smooth mouthfeel, and contained a robust finish. Very nice pinot.

  • 2006 VIE Winery Syrah Las Madres Vineyard 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    Full bodied nose of candied plums and cherry. Had a distinct hazelnut and mocha component to the wine…and overall was very dense.

  • 2007 Skylark Wine Company las aves 92 Points

    USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County

    Floral notes on the nose are followed by a bit of burnt earth and blueberries. I found a subtle complexity to this wine as it displayed the ripeness and explosive power of some Central Coast blends I’ve had lately, yet the finesse and poise of a 1998 Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Very enjoyable bottle of wine.

  • 2006 Sol Rouge Cabernet Sauvignon 86 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    The gentleman pouring this bottle characterized it as a “typical, sluttly Napa cabernet” and I have to agree. Big time cassis, ripe red fruit and a slight mintiness were coming across rather clearly. Slighty too juicy for my current tastes.

  • 2006 Sol Rouge Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, California, North Coast, Lake County

    I believe this is my first cabernet from Lake County. After this bottle, I’m interested to look for more. Grown around 3,000 ft, it was so interesting to taste this after Sol Rouge’s Napa bottling. This wine is young, and still a tannic beast. Underneath the tannis is a very attractive structure though, and I’d love to revisit this is 3-5 years.

  • 2008 Castoro Cellars Fumé Blanc 87 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

    Appealing nose of seashells and dried out bark. I wasn’t really expecting such a rich/spicy nose on a fume blanc, but it was refreshing to come across this. The wine exhibited hints of lemongrass, grapefruit, and “spicy tangerines”.

  • 2008 VIE Winery "Belle-Amie" 83 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

    Bright ruby red in color, this was a bit too fruity for my tastes. Didn’t exhibit the mineral notes that I usually gravitate towards in rose.

  • 2007 Sol Rouge The Gypsy Blanc 88 Points

    USA, California, North Coast, Lake County

    Very nice blend of rhone white grape varietals. Dense honey, lemon and ginger on the nose. I could smell this wine for months…just really enjoyable. Didn’t end up having the viscosity I enjoy in white rhone blends, but this is a solid effort.

  • 2007 Sol Rouge Viognier 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    I’m becoming a really big fan of viognier from Catie’s Corner in the RRV. While a component of Sol Rouge’s Gypsy Blanc, the stand alone viognier has more going on. Still has the dense honey, but there’s also a bit of spiciness that I hadn’t really expected. Would be interested to put away a couple bottles of this to see how it matures.

  • 2006 Sol Rouge Gypsy Rouge 87 Points

    USA, California, North Coast, Red Hills Lake County

    Red rhone blend from Sol Rouge. Hints of pepper, baking spices, and coffee on the nose. While not as impressive as some of the other Rhone Rangers I’ve had, this is a solid effort.

  • 2005 LaTour Vineyards Syrah 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder

    Lots of sour cherries and a nice gaminess on the nose. A full-bodied, powerful syrah here – while not really in line with my current tastes, I imagine this wine would have a lot of fans.
