This was a fun blindtasting, with friends visiting from L.A., at my sister and brother-in-law's home in Kenwood, Sonoma County. We started with a Krug Grand Cuvee, and moved on to this eclectic blindtasting, consisting of a lot of my new arrivals from Garagiste. Our selection of entrees were from Kenwood’s Café Citti, which is a favorite local restaurant. We concluded with a couple of 2001 Sauternes, the Rabaud-Promis and the Rayne Vigneau.

  • 2004 Mitolo Shiraz Reiver 95 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Blackberry liqueur, sexy nose; very tasty, concentrated, blackberry, berry, plum palate; long finish (with one number #1 vote and three number #2s, this was our 2nd rank wine of the night)

  • 2003 Pretty Sally Shiraz Estate 94 Points

    Australia, Victoria

    Sexy Aussie Shiraz nose; sexy, peppery, blackberry, black fruit palate; medium finish (from a price value standpoint, this was the star of the night, and with one #1 score, three #2s and a #3, it was our 3rd ranking wine)

  • 2003 Long Shadows Wineries Pirouette 94 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    Beautiful Syrah nose; wonderful, concentrated black fruit, berry palate; long finish (this is a project of Philippe Melka and Agustin Hunneeus made from Cabernet Sauvignon (56%), Merlot (22%), Syrah (10%), Cabernet Franc (9%) and 3% Petit Verdot; with one #1 vote, one #2 and one #3, this was the group's fourth ranked wine of the night)

    Olive and burnt toast nose; yummy sweet plum, cherry palate; medium finish (with three number 1 scores and one number 3, mine, this was our winner of the evening)

    Good blueberry nose; nice blueberry and mulberry flavors on solid palate, a bit tight yet but delicious; medium finish (a blend of equal parts Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot and Grenache)

    Figgy nose, with mulberry and cat pee; ok fig and clove palate; short finish (this is mainly Syrah with a dollop of Rousanne; with two "ugh" votes, it was our second worst wine of the night)
