Introduction

A rag-tag of Sydney & regional-based Auswine forum degerates gather with a surfeit of wine, as usual. (Some even taken home, unopened.) Venue provided excellent food, good service, reasonable prices. Was a bit noisy - as is the modern fashion; it was just as well it was so empty - the noise would have been deafening otherwise. An all-Australian theme, but there were a few oldies among them, just to make things more interesting.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 1992 Tahbilk Marsanne

Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Nagambie Lakes

Mid gold. Lifted sweet honeysuckle aromas. Some gentle aged characters on the palate – not unlike an older riesling. Savoury-sweet and mouth-watering – drinking nicely now but there’s no hurry to drink up yet. Super wine for the price.

  • 1977 Henschke Shiraz Mount Edelstone

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

This was served as a mystery wine. Brick red with some paler tinting, and also some sediment. Clearly an older wine. A gentle, restrained nose of varnish and leather polish. Some chocolate also. Very smooth & integrated on the palate. Medium body, but good length. Very easy to drink. Splendid wine which most of the table picked as mid-late 80s, not ’77. Quite a surprise.

  • 1988 Lindeman's Pyrus

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Brick red. Lovely evolved chocolate & leather nose, with some slightly pongy vegetal characters. Tannins are very soft. Distinct acid presence – in its dotage this will will be clearly overrun by VA. Fruit is fading now, but wine still has medium body and length and is holding up OK. Pleasant older wine.

  • 1983 Lindeman's Hunter River Burgundy Bin 6600

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Mid brick red and lightening somewhat. This wine has a reputation for defining ‘Hunter sweaty saddle’, but all I detected was some slightly leathery characters. Gentle, somewhat earthy flavours abound, but nothing sweaty or pongy. A Llindemans Classic Release wine in 2000 (ie. cellared by Lindemans themselves until last year) which may explain its fine condition. Lovely acid balance (sometimes a problem in older Hunters). Medium weight, with lovely gentle flavours and great length. Very attractive wine.

  • 1986 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri Claret

    Australia, South Australia

Still a deep rich red. A stunning display of semi-primary fruit aromas on the nose – plums, blackberries, chocolate. Wonderfully integrated on the palate; no edges, all smooth velvety length and a great long finish. Years ahead of it still – the pick of the older wines – quite wonderful.

  • 1998 Best's Great Western Shiraz Thomson Family

Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Great Western

Glowing purple red. Blackcurrant and spice with submerged oak. Incredibly fine on the palate; more velvet texture, with fine tannins that build on the palate – this is a stunning wine which is powerful yet subtle, with great length of finish. Hard to believe a wine could taste so good, so young. Just stunning.

  • 1998 Bleasdale Shiraz Generations

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek

Deep purple/red. Raw nose, especially after the Bests. Violently aggressive raspberries and strong charry oak. Very raw and unintegrated on the palate – but reasonably balanced none-the-less – I think this will turn into a nice wine, but it really needs some time to meld together. Large and powerful, but clearly not ready yet.

  • 1998 Koonowla Shiraz

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Deep red-black. A spicy, spearmint/musk/menthol nose. Beautifully fine tannins, and with enough acid to carry everything along nicely. Smooth & even on the palate, manages a rich full body without ever being overpowering. Quite stunning. The find of the night, without question.

  • 1944 Seppeltsfield Para Liqueur

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

The usual tawny brown, with a richly intense caramelised rancio nose Rich & syrupy, warming, with great body & length. Massively sweet, but massively acidic too. Thick but not cloying. A beautifully contradictory wine…
