Introduction

Posting an old event - for the life of me I can't work out what the theme was for this dinner! Oh, well.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 1999 Fishburn & O'Keefe Riesling

    Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania

Pale straw/green. Appley nose. Full, fruity palate in a restrained way. Hint of musk, Not quite dry. Quite a short finish.

  • 1996 Madew Chardonnay

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Mid-yellow with some faint greenness remaining. Dusry nose of smoky oak. Figs, peanuts and dates underneath. Still some acid holding the palate together. The oak has integrated nicely & adds to the smooth texture on the palate. Medium weight & pleasant finish holding together nicely, but with not too long to go probably.

  • 1998 Madew Chardonnay

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Mid yellow. Clean youthful lime & grapefruit nose. Melon fruits appear on the palate, with a dusty bloom from the oak. Texture is rather oily – table consensus says there’s something wrong – it seems to be devoid of acid somehow. It changes in the glass; the lemony fruits lift on the palate, but the acid still remains reticent. Drink up, I’d say.

  • 1998 Best's Great Western Pinot Noir

Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Great Western

Pungent waft of classic varietal aromas - earth, forest floor, mushrooms. Medium-fullish weight on palate, becomes oddly pepperminty. Strange wine.

  • 1997 Redgate Cabernet Franc

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Brick red, with a developed, cedary nose. Nicely elegant fruit, submerged under aged spicy flavours. Manages medium-bodied weight, but remains a bit hollow at its core. Drink soon.

  • 1991 Happs Merlot

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Very deep red still. Nose of dark chocolate, cassis, black pepper. Is there shiraz in here? There’s development too; some leathery sweaty pongy notes are present as well. Tannins have left the building; the ripe body of the fruit remains and coats the palate nicely, but then all fades away quite quickly to a short finish. Falls apart as is sits in the glass – drink up.

  • 1997 Hesperos Shiraz

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Very deep red. More cabernet than shiraz, with cassis/currents on the nose, although there is some pepper too. Soft and one-dimensional on the palate; weak tannins, short finish. How high do they crop this? Blah.

  • 1998 Wetherall Shiraz

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Red/black. Closed nose. Lots of ripe red berries & chocolate on the nose, following through onto a medium-weight but pretty undistinguished palate. OK, but nothing special.

  • 1997 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Inky, black/crimson appearance. Concentrated minty fruits are reticent, dark-greenish in profile. Ripeness? Tannins are concentrated but very fine; they gradually grow stronger over the course of the glass/bottle. Full bodied palate, but remains pretty closed and generally reticent. Long, one-note finish. Might age OK.

  • 1996 Cranswick Wines Sémillon Autumn Gold Zirilli Vineyard

    Australia, New South Wales

Pale/mid gold. Rich botrytis nose of apricots & passionfruit. Rich caramel flavours ride an acid backbone, and carry to a clean finish. Well balanced at this age.
