Introduction

Education and wine tasting hosted by Mark Pardoe, MW, Berrys' Bordeaux Specialist.

I purchased this for Mrs C as an early Christmas present, consequently these notes are hers.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2006 Château de Fonbel

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Mainly merlot, tobacco nose, easy soft palette, good tannins, "generous" wine, clean palette. On second sniff, quite scented then spicy on the palette. Family also owns Ch Ausone

  • 2005 Château Figeac

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

1/3 cab sav, 1/3 cab franc, 1/3 merlot. Def cab sav, blimey, talk about tannin! strong sharp nose, minerals. Great up and down taste, exotic and complex. Parma Violets. Apparently considered one of the great wines of this region for this vintage.

  • 2005 Château Grand Ormeau

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lalande de Pomerol

Merlot & Cab Franc. big nose, big taste, quick finish, no lingering taste like the 05 Figeac. Meaty, satisfying but not complex - prob great with a stew, that sort of homely taste. A bit rustic but honest. Definitely a Sunday winter wine.

  • 2001 Château La Conseillante

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Petrol aromas, strong kerosene. 80% Merlot 20% Cab Franc. Fabulous terroir a continually improving wine, and what a fab taste, great tannins, long, long taste, big nose but sophisticated palette, almonds, dark fruit, really good. The MW says that the wine is still "very shy".

  • 2007 Château La Garde Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Semillon & Sauvignon blanc, great nose, gooseberries, minerals, lychee. Lovely flavour, really broad, creamy, rich palette, lovely finish. Maturity will give a honeyed tang to the palette

  • 2005 Château Villa Bel-Air

    France, Bordeaux, Graves

Own Lynch Bages as well, very scented nose. More Lavender than violets but very aromatic, very different flavour (poss aniseed?) lovely tannin. Second sniff brings in a more rustic element; hay, cut grass, lots of tannin but doesn't linger. MW says Great Cab Sav, - height in flavour, depth in tannin

  • 1999 Château Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

First nose herby, especially parsley, very relaxed palette - almost closed but flavour just continues to grow and grow; very sophisticated. Lovely
