Amuse bouche of pea creme , roasted quail and a really rich and sweetly caramelised foie gras.

    France, Champagne

    (1/28/2010)

Heady fresh bread and old cab smells. A robustly driven champagne. Fully flavoured, grand and commanding. Needs time to come together . At the moment, just a pot of stew in its first hour but with really good ingredients.Nice acidity.

  • 1983 Château Doisy-Védrines 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    (1/28/2010)

Remnants of richness but is showing more youthful acidity and lift than the rich complexity usually associated with aged sauteres or barsac for that matter. Simple with light touches of golden raisins and just maybe a hair of vanillin beans but mostly fleeting and kinda watery. Grippy acid though.

  • 1973 Maison Champy Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 84 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    (1/29/2010)

This is a totally different bottle from the previous bottling we had. It lays claim to the theory that with whites, bottle variation becomes more pronounced with age. This bottle is much more palatable. Minty menthol euclyptus, aparagus and barley beans.Very vegetal. Also tastes sligtly menthol with character. Touch of wet moss. I kinda like this bottle with its seemingly awkward trot . Does beautifully with mushroom soup.

Flight 3 - A Strong Flight of Reds (6 Notes)

Paired with slow cooked black angus that was really too rich and sweet but very robustly flavoured.

  • 1990 Rapet Père et Fils Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru

    (1/29/2010)

Excellent wine. Full of flowers, meat, coffee extract and reeks of masculinity. However, excellently structured palate with black tea, savory cherries, an umami-ish tone and enticing long finish. An iron fist in a velvet glove. This punches above its belt like a grand cru and a nuit at that. Delicious!

  • 1997 Vieux Château Certan 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    (1/29/2010)

Leafy , some green bell peppers, herbal notes, more cabernet than merlot with some meat thrown in for measure. Even on the palate, this is structured cabernet with black berries and blue berries and a seemingly modernesque tone to it. Still a very balanced classy effort.

  • 1966 Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage 79 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    (1/29/2010)

Definitely a few notches below the 63, this is not at all integrated and has awkward jammy blackforest fruits that though sweet , does seem to be expired and past its prime. Nose was somewhat nicer with tar and spice and old world portish notes. Colouration was weak. Not sure that I enjoyed it as much .
