LdC Top Volnay Shootout

A really nice dinner where the LdC took a tour of top volnay producers and vineyards. Lots of good detailed comparisons here across vintage, vineyard, and producer. Alan did a great job organizing the wines as usual.

Wines showed great with not a dud in the bunch and a few really spactacular wines (71 Angerville, 02 Coche, and 06 Leroy for me). Gregg threw us for a loop on the blind whites with the Pouilly Vinzelles but they actually showed very well (especially for what they are).

Also got to try some of the dishes from the new chef and CH and early returns look VERY promising. The duck rice dish was a near revelation!

Whites tasted double blind and reds tasted single blind within flight as usual.

  This is a really lovely champagne that is drinking beautifully right now. Have had several bottles over the past few months and none have disappointed. Great energy and focus with a reasonable bread/yeast element.

• 2002 La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts Cuvée Millerandée 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Vinzelles

  Medium pale yellow color. Medium full creay nose of buttery oak and some mineral. Nice prickly mineral white fruit on the palate with hints of lemon. Tasted blind - surprisingly good for what it is.

  Medium pale yellow color. MEdium caramel hazelnut nose. sour lemon on the palate with a touch of bitterness. Showing more evolved and less energy than the Millerande cuvee.

  Pale red color with hints of orange at the edges. Full nose of earthy dusty forest floor with perfume notes. Nice complex dried black cherry and floral notes of rose and lavendar on the palate. Really lovely mature burg.

  Full red cherry color. dustry angular black fruit nose with a hint of prunes. Full round soft red cherry fruit on the palate. some sweetnes sremaining but also a bit of pruny earthiness.

  Pale garnet brick color. Lovely rich bit briar spicy red cherry nose with hints of dried rose. Full brigth marichino red cherry fruit on the palate with prickly acidity. A nice mature burg with a little better nose than palate. 93-94 pts.

  Medium full red/purple color. Big forward nose of black cherry and boysenberry with some overtones of sulphur and burnt oak. Tight dusty tannic black cherry on the palate with a searing finish. Tough right now but could be upside here?

  Clear red color. Full nose of freshly opened can of JIF peanut butter (wild). Nice red/black cherry fruit on the palate with that same odd note of peanut butter carrying through. Odd as it sounds, the wine was still quite good.

  Pale pink red color. Full nose of lovely dusty earth and mineral - savory. Big juicy red cherry fruit with hints of sweet. Very nice. One of those great burgs that seems lighter-bodied but carry a great punch of concentration. Easy WOTF for me.
