Savigny at RSJ

A convivial evening of drinking and enjoying wine rather than merely tasting it. The food at RSJ was vastly improved since my one previous visit last October. This time the ribeye was properly blue as requested. Cheese came as a very generous plate, and the service was friendly and helpful.

  Young nose. Bright red fruit, nicely mineral, tannins still a little dry on the finish though it opens up after a while. Promising. **(*)

  Slightly smokey, dusty fruit nose. Quite dense red fruit on the palate. Lacks a bit of definition. Decent grip though.**1/2

• 2002 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Grands Liards

  Interesting nose, slightly sweaty with a touch of coffeegrounds and a spot of caramel. Comely. Lighter, nicely balanced, crisp dry finish. Rounding out. Very enjoyable. ***

  Magnum. Nice nose, quite ripe with slightly cherry fruit. Quite firm, minerally, opening out in the glass. Doesn't quite get over a slight dryness/austerity on the finish but very decent. ***

  Lovely fruit combined with a slightly savoury, marmite nose. Proper wine, starting tn develop a silkiness. Lovely but still a little young. ***1/2

  Quite cloudy. Nicely sweet fruit. Decent. Opens up to a coffeeground flavour with a savoury edge. Hanging in there still. Very pleasant and improved with cheese. **

Consensus was that we were struck by the similarity of the wines - all very much of a family. It also seemed likely that most of this sort of more modest burgundy is drunk too soon. Optimal maturity seemed to sit somewhere between the 'almost there' 93 and the 'just holding on' 83s.
