crisp acidity with plenty of vanilla cream, but restrained and remained in balance. Typical Cali Chardonnay.

Initially quite shy on the nose and took an hr or 2 in the decanter to come around. Never had a flamboyant nose, but eventually showed a little barnyard funk, tobacco, and blackberry. Balanced and focused palate, good acidity and still firm tannins, with blue fruit tones and a pleasant cedar note that hung on through the finish, while adding a touch of slate and mocha. Came across as fresh and lively, and quite youthful. I don’t think this is quite in it’s drinking window yet.

1990 Château Latour Les Forts de Latour Flawed

Initially was showing almost no fruit, was acidic and unpleasant. After a few hrs some funk had blown off and was showing a lengthy finish of cedar and mineral. Never showed much fruit and seems tired. I think an off bottle, 86 points otherwise.

Much better than the ’06 regional bottling I’ve had. Big aromatic nose of cola, black cherry, and maybe a little plum. Palate was huge with gobs of fruit flavors, but maintains balance with fresh acidity and never a hint of heat. Fantastically long finish with a little oak influence. Made in a style I’m less excited about these days, but this was seamless, balanced, and had an elegance that was impressive in this powerful style.

Wow, I wasn’t expecting this. Nose of forest, almonds, and cherry (no cola here). Refined, subtle, focused palate with cherry and a great licorice note I rarely taste in Pinot outside of Europe. Hangs on the palate with a lengthy finish of slate and forest floor. Will definitely be looking for more of this.

Flamboyant nose with hint of barnyard (the good kind), herbs and spices. Palate was quite acidic, with firm tannins on the backend, but very open and accessible, showing kirsch and herbs de Provence on a dense cherry palate. Lengthy finish of spice, tobacco, and mineral. Shows a very similar flavor profile to the ’06, but more open. Fantastic Pegau.

A modern Bordeaux, but would never be mistaken for the Cali cabs this night. This too took a while to open and had an interesting barnyard and toasted oak nose. Highly concentrated palate, but focused and not overdone, with black cherry and blackberry flavors. Adds mocha, flint, and cedar on the backend. An impressive bdx that is quite enjoyable now with a good decant and should improve with time.

2006 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard 93 Points

Sweet vanilla nose, with cedar and currants. Palate was quite concentrated with lots of fruit flavors – mostly currants and plum, with some cherry and blackberry. Quite tannic but still lush and soft and thought I’m sensitive to tannic wines, this didn’t bother me Full mouthfeel and very long finish with classic Napa vanilla/mocha notes. Strong oak influences that might integrate with time, but not obtrusive. This is what I want in a Napa cab.

Darker fruits and seemed more extracted and riper than the Outpost. Deep dark fruits, currants, and blackberry. Big lush palate with good acidity and firm tannins. Lengthy mocha and vanilla finish. This seemed a little awkward to me but I think it will settle down with time.

2006 Hall Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall Napa Valley 91 Points

Darker and more brawny than I recall in napa. Nose was a little shy, but showed cassis, raspberry, and vanilla. Palate quite acidic, but lush mouthfeel and soft tannins. Palate adds some dark berries, but fruit flavors are mostly of cassis, and lots of creamy vanilla. Lengthy finish of milk chocolate and vanilla cream. Still quite good, but different profile than the first tasting and lots more oak influence. Drinking fine now, may improve.
Day#2 Disappointing compared to stiff competition. Was showing slightly worse than the previous night with the fruit overshadowed by strong oak notes. For $10 more would rather have the Outpost.
