Wines at the Mill

Introduction

I spent my first weekend at my parents' new mill house in Appomattox, VA, in the middle of nowhere. it was freezing cold, so we went inside and popped some wine that my father brought back from a recent trip to Bulgaria. Both wines were unique and pleasant. I brought along a unique dessert wine that we all enjoyed.

  • 2008 Domaine Boyar Traminer "Royal Selection" 89 Points

    Bulgaria, Thracian Valley

    the nose on this traminer is ripe and floral with some green apple. it's full-bodied, spicy and very unique in its mouthfeel. really mineral-driven. i love minerally wines, but this one is almost abrasive with its minerality. i like it, but i don't think many people would. would go very well with oysters. that would be an excellent pairing. it's got a really long finish with lime zest. almost makes me think of a mosel riesling. quite impressive considering it's from bulgaria and was quite cheap.

  • 2007 Todoroff Wine Cellar Mavrud Gallery 85 Points

    made from the mavrud variety, my first time with this variety. bright purple color. nose shows lots of currants and red rasberries. the palate is surprisingly dense and tannic. really big wine. unfortunately, there's a really hefty dose of oak, it's a bit much for me. and that's a shame because i think the fruit underneath is delicious. maybe this would be better in a few years. not sure about aging this variety, but i would assume it needs time. in the decanter it opened up to show some good fruit. medium finish. interesting experience.

  • 2004 Château d'Aydie Vin de Liqueur Maydie 90 Points

    dark purple color. smells candied, like purple laffy tafft, with some candied plums. but on the palate, this is something totally different. full-bodied and dense on the palate. sweetness is perfectly balanced with the tannins, which are firm. not really any of the raisiny, date notes of a port. this has lots of ripe plums, dark blackberry fruits and some earthy notes. very long finish. a really unique dessert wine that was spectacular on a cold night at the millhouse.
