$15 or less is a tough price point as has been mentioned...if restricted to that I'd look to Spain/Portugal, maybe some Loire, Madiran, areas surrounding Burgundy, though a friend recently pointed me to a 2010 red burg 1er from pernand Vergelesses for $15. The basic Italian stuff like Dolcetto, Barbera, and Sangiovese I like usually goes in the $18 - 20+ range.

At $25 (usually $30+), I have been defending with Bourgogne Rouge, Langhe Nebbiolo, and mix in some German Riesling on occasion. Always fun playing at this level to assess new vintages.

THESE. Excellent recommendations.

Forgot about the Hermit Crab...and I even have one in the fridge, waiting its turn. We hadn't tried it in a few years but opened one last Thanksgiving and enjoyed it. I'll have to keep my eyes out for some of these others.

If I compare CT reviews and available descriptions to my preferences (mostly keying in on mentions of acidity & ripeness), I can often find decently drinkable CdR, rioja, riesling, muscadet, etc. in this price range, even if it may not be anything profound or memorable. If an affordable bottle enhances a meal and provokes a little thoughtful enjoyment on the way down, I'm a happy man.

Anyone who lives within spitting distance of a Total Wine go and grab a bottle of the 2012 Zenato Valpollicella Superiore for $12.99. Forget about what you think Valpo and Bardolino are supposed to be like and get ready to schlep back for a case buy while your good stuff gets a few more zzzz's...

These are currently in my stock and all <$18:

Domaine Jean Teiller Menetou-Salon Blanc
Domaine Vrignaud Chablis
Glen Carlou Grand Classique
St. Urbans-Hof Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett
Renegade Wine Co. Grenache
For a Song Syrah
2009 Château Pierre de Montignac
Saint-Cosme Côtes du Rhône

And a few different Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine... hard to go wrong on these

I only mention the vintage for two because I believe the rest will be good from whatever year you can find.

Would love to have opinions on whites as well!

Here are 5 whites I enjoyed in 2014, each of which are <$15. The <$15's would be my specialty.

2013 Astica Torrontés, Lujan de Cuyo. About $7.

2013 Matchbook Chardonnay Old Head, Dunnigan Hills. About $12.

2011 Domaine Laroche Petit Chablis. About $11.

2013 Jean-Luc Colombo Côtes du Rhône Les Abeilles Blanc. About $9. The best QPR of the five listed. Went back for more.

2013 Domaine Lafage Chardonnay Novellum. About $11.

And, a bonus vote for the San Felice Chianti Classico. A great value IMHO.
Cheers!

Tamarack Cellars - Firehouse Red ($12 @ Costco)
Bogle - Essential Red ($9 @ Costco)
Hess Collection - Cabernet Sauvignon
Elevation - Jammin (I have it listed as $15, but that might be after discount)
Poet's Leap - Riesling - used to think whites are only for mixing with pellegrino (technically over: $15.99 @ Costco)

I drink Cameron Hughes wines as my defenders... They can all be found for less than $20, and I haven't had any that were not worth what I paid for them. Nothing spectacular either...

I would also add (although not sure how available they are in the US) The Wolftrapp from South Africa. From Boukenhootskloof who make amazing wines.

Yes, the Wolftrapp is readily available around here and typically is outstanding. The Goats do Roam series from SA is also very good. As for Pinotage, I rather like the stuff. For some reason I enjoy the smoky aromas.

Plenty of affordable quality wines from wineries in the Midwest are my "Cellar Defenders"
Wollersheim in Wisconsin
Stone Hill in Missouri
Konstantin Frank in NY
Numerous small wineries around Traverse City MI
Tassel Ridge in Iowa

Love CdR

Try Hahn Meritage. For $15 or so it can't be beat. Try blind tasting it with $30-40 Cali Bx blends.

An amazing wine for the money. I have not had one in quite a while, must remedy that.

There are so many candidates up here that I need some help with the defense from them. They have virtually surrounded my cellar sticking out there corks as a challenge knowing I am a weak willed, indecisive person.
We could start with any entry level WV Pinot from Patti Green, Matello, Vincent, Walter Scott, Cameron and the list is growing.

I was actually looking for the screaming deals at local retailers thread but couldn't find it. Dama winery in Walla Walla is discounting their GSM blend "Dama Nation" and their Chardonnay 50% on a case purchase. I bought both of these happily at full retail and just reloaded when I heard of the deal. The discounted price is $15 for the GSM and $10.50 for the Chardonnay.

I like Altare and Sottimano Dolcetto and Clos du Mont Olivet CdR for reds. There are many dry and minerally Italian whites and some Chablis in that range as others have mentioned.

2008 Di Bruno Vino Rosso Santa Barbara County Grenache Blend, $13.62
2010 Di Bruno Sangiovese Rolando's Blend ~$15.00

D'Alfonso-Curran wines have a bunch of different labels but they often have a "kitchen sink" blend for sale by the case at their pick-up parties. I have grabbed two of them and they were both good food wines and a terrific QPR.
