How do you all go about finding other CT users with similar tastes to your own?  Do you select an index wine and go through the public tasting notes to find a note you agree with?  That's not so hard for one wine, but do you do that for various types of wines?  For example, I may agree with Eric's palette on Bordeaux wines, but not Burgundy or Germany.  Do you keep a "watch list" of users for different regions?  Seems like a lot of work.  To me, though, this seems like it could be one of CT's most powerful tools.  Just wondering how (or if) others are using the database this way.

Certainly the boards which have made big money for their devisers have encouraged participants to communicate off-board (e.g. Friends Reunited).
I would have thought some investigation by Eric would be warranted as it both adds value to CT and to the users.
Obviously he must continue the 'anonymity' offer which many will insist on, but a way of voluntarily sharing notes, ideas, even wines would seem beneficial.
I'd use it.
By the way my only expertise: Bordeaux red - at the moment.
Specialist subjects years 2000 and 2005 ;)

Just wanted to bump this back up to see if anyone else has something to add.  I still think it would be great to be able to develop a personalized watch list so that if UserA, whom I have tagged as having similar tastes to my own, posts a note regarding a wine I do not currently own, I would be alerted to seek that wine out.

I think it would be great if there were additional features to facilitate this. I've found over time that by simply keeping an eye on the other CellarTrackers who also have our wines in their inventories I've come to recognize the handles of users who seem to have palates similar to my own. Reading through their comments and cellar contents has been very interesting--and has keyed us in to wines that we might otherwise have missed.

It would be neat if there were a way to flag other users and view their latest purchases, consumed bottles, and reviews. In a similar vein, it would be interesting to be able to register an interest in a particular region or category of wine and access a summary of relevant information posted by other users.

Some other communities go so far as allowing folks to rate the contributions of their fellow users (www.boardgamegeek.com is a good example). While it can work well and help build a sense of community, it's something of a balancing act when it comes to privacy issues and avoiding personal conflicts.

The way CellarTracker is currently set up, there's a huge amount of collaboration, but interaction between users is restricted to the forums. While in many ways I think it would be cool to more directly interact with my fellow CellarTrackers, I definitely think that any features that facilitate that should follow the opt-in model used for sharing the contents of your cellar. While I'm generally of the attitude that the concept of online privacy is an illusion, I share an uneasiness in broadcasting to the world the value of personal possessions stored at a particular location. If I had a more "marketable" cellar, I would be even more concerned. ;-) (Interesting that I feel that uneasiness more when it comes to our wine collection than it does for our game collection...though I haven't read any news stories lately about thieves targeting euro-games.)
