Here is a brief update on CellarTracker!

As of last night, Patrick has now joined us as the third active user. We are now tracking 3,072 bottles between the three of us! It’s very interesting to see how we have each spread 1,000 bottles in fairly different areas of the world (but boy, we all love our Quilceda…).
Now that I am back to work the pace of innovation is slowing, but I still managed to make some interesting progress over the past week.
- I am a lot closer to having prescriptive guidance (and very good website support) for some very cool barcoding features.
- I also added a few small features to make the database support Patrick’s data more cleanly (and all of which expose better generic flexibility for other users).
New features and bug fixes added last night:

Cache most recent review
To improve the performance of the main view on the site I cache the most recent score, WebPage and drinking window for each WA, WS and IWC. I used to aggregate that data on demand, and this added a 1-2 second pause to rendering of the main page. Site perf should be a bit better now.

UPC/EAN barcode support
Initial basic support is to add a column to the Wine table so you can capture the UPC/EAN for a given wine definition. I even scanned a couple dozen of these into the database. NOTE: so far in my collection I am only finding UPC’s on about 15-20% of bottles.

Per user drinking windows
Moved the BeginConsume and EndConsume columns from the Wine table to a per-user table. You won’t really notice this, but now if you add your own drinking window it is yours and only yours. (Expect to see more UI soon to roll this up in relation to Parker drinking windows.)

Display purchase data
I now show purchase data to other users and simply blank out the price. So if Jason wants to see where I got my Leonetti, he can see that now. He still doesn’t know what I paid.

BUG: Adding duped wine
It used to be if you accidentally added a wine definition that exactly dupes something that already exists, you would get an obscure error. Now I just redirect you to the existing wine as you would expect.

BUG: Error deleting wine
Now when deleting a wine I give a proper confirmation instead of an obscure error message.
On tap for the coming week:
- I am looking into getting a MUCH beefier server to run this and switching to Windows Server 2003. The site is still performing well, but I am worried that it will start to fall over if 10-15 people are hammering away at the same time.
- I plan to make more progress on barcode printing, so that it is easy to print labels with valuable info from the database and unique barcodes per bottle.
- I would like to add some cool views so we can all see recent tasting notes and get a stronger sense of community around these.
- I have some cleanup for Patrick, and I think all of you have legacy tasting notes I want to help you get into the database in bulk.
- I have a few other users on deck, and as you know acquiring a new user is somewhat time consuming.
- As always, I try to capture loose-end and progress in the to-do list.
