I kid, I kid.

But I did want to raise the question with Eric of what he wants this forum to become.  Eric, you've stated in the past that you would prefer this forum to stay "under the radar" rather than spend your days policing it, as is inevitable when too many varying personalities converge.  It seems, though, that the matter may have been decided for you to some extent.  So what to do?

Options:
o Let the CT Forum become the wild west of wine (I doubt anyone wants this).
o Vigilantly police it yourself (I doubt YOU want this!).
o Hire paid forum moderators (does anyone do this anymore?).
o Seek volunteer moderators from amongst the forum posters (OneTwoThreeNOTit!!!)

Okay, I don't have the answer, I mostly just wanted to raise the issue before the issue is raised forcefully.  Thoughts from others?  Especially our "new" posters (realizing, of course, that many of our "new" posters may be longtime CT users and even forum lurkers).

How about the 'do nothing' option.

I'm with ob2s there.  This board generally does a good job of policing itself.  I've seen two people people flamed off the board in a little over two years.  Eric has stepped in occasionally when things get out of hand.  And I think we make it pretty clear to anyone that comes here to advertise that they are welcome but their commercial plugs are not.  (smig is the exception that proves the rule - primarily, he contributes to the forum.  His day job is just a benefit to a lot of us.)

Generally, though, I think we keep it pretty friendly and informal and would like to see it stay that way.

I'm in the do nothing camp for now. Maybe deputize mods later. But I am also a fan of a lot of other boards and want to see them thrive.

I'm with you guys on this one. The board is what we make it or we will go some where else. Some times my fur is brushed the wrong way, but I try to take a deep breath and move on. Too much ire drives people away. People can be passionate but remain civil. I personally value the camaraderie of the people of this forum. I will call it class and decorum. Something sorely lacking in our present society. A great loss.

fantastic post ... i couldn't have said it better myself.  my only question would be this: what happens when "we" becomes a whole lotta different people with different personalities, some of them ridden with disrespect and unhappiness?  that's when the problems start.  i am very thankful our forum does not have to deal with that at present.

It's very good for fora to have evolving populations.  Nothing would be more stolid and tedious than a cliquey closed shop of just the same old faces.  The trick of course is in ensuring that the ethos of a place is not lost in the evolution.  I doubt if that would be a problem, though - in general, new members tend to be a self-selecting group who stay if they like what they find, and leave if they don't.  This forum has certainly shown in the past that it can survive the occasional rabble-rousing troll...

I think we do a pretty good job of self-moderating, and alert Eric when there is a problem.  I'm in the do nothing camp for now.  Personally I think the pompous air blowers from a certain other board wouldn't feel comfortable here--too much Joe Le Taxi for them.  I suspect that even if they show their faces, of their own accrod they won't stay around long.  And if they do, it's always fun to have a FNG to torment...

Do we even know if the forum has seen significantly increased traffic?

FNG?

I prefer the Do Nothing approach - it is civil and polite most of the time here.

Generally speaking I've found "do nothing" is the way to go. Seems appropriate in this instance as well.

Personally I don't see this board growing that much.  Wine Berserkers has obviously inherited the lion's share of the migrant posters with a 20% growth in one week.  Dan Posner has taken over Serge's old Wine Talk board and lured some prominent posters there.  He'll likely grow quite a bit in the short term.  Between those two the remaining boards of CT, WS, VC, WinExiles, etc...each will likely only see I minor blip of an increase.

As a newb here before the eBob banishment, I'd agree this site is very good at allowing newcomers to find their own vibe, stay if they want, leave if they want, and contribute how and if they want. I'm pretty much a wine neophyte too so I've learned a lot here and folks tolerence level for some of my naive questions/posts has been admirable.

I've seen board wars/mass exodus/extensive trolling is some other forums I've followed and the wine forums, particularly this one, are very tame comparatively. I'm impressed that mbannon's question could even be brought up and discussed civilly in the open forum.

Eric is obviously the best judge, but I'm sure he also appreciates the offers to help even if it's still not out of control.

peer pressure on forums is a strong influencer.  I'm on another forum (different topic) and it's know as "A forum for Intelligent dicussion" and states such on the banner.

They really can be mainly self-moderating if the core shares the same vision and I believe CT does.

Hi. Long time CT user, new forum user/poster. Still a member at Ebob, but started exploring here precisely because it has an egalitarian vibe. I like it, and will continue to browse and contribute, and be a good citizen. I also agree with the "do nothing" approach. Chances are the culture will remain as it is, because the critical mass of contributors don't want it to change.

I think we are doing ok. I don’t go any other boards (wine or otherwise), but the comments I read associated with news articles are “very special”.

In  the spirit of doing nothing, I think we should treat Wadcorp as the sacrificial Philly fan who gets tazered and Ban him so he can start his own free thinking wine board.   I kid, I kid,

One thing that I did notice at WB is that so much activity is burying topics really quickly.  I am not a fan of having to dig 3-4 pages deep for topics when I dont check for board while I sleep.   Long live CT and its cultish appeal.

Off-topic:  I'm amazed that people actually have the time for multiple forums/boards... I can barely keep up with the CT Forum and I'm a mini-poster at that...

How much time on average do folks spend on the forum(s)?  I probably check in for 5-10 minutes a few times a day but not much more than that...

On-topic:  Agree with the majority that the posters here are self-moderating, so probably no need for "official" moderators at this time...
