What tips do all you have for keeping wine labels in tip top condition? I find that after a while my bottles become scuffed, develop small tears from racking. I would appreciate any advice.

On my older bottles I have used plastic cling wrap from the kitchen with success. Just wrapped over the label and not the cork.

Easy and practical.  Any particular reason not to cover the cork (besides the fact that you just don't need to and it's a pain if you're just trying to save the label)?

No - but "you just don't need to" can be a pretty darn huge disincentive if your cellar is big enough!

I am thinking about doing that to my younger bottles of bdx that I want to save 20+ years. Thanks for the info.

That's a disincentive I'd like to have!

Just thinking out loud... any benefit to covering the cork as well?  Additional vapor/gas barrier?

Not to hijack the thread but my reason for not covering the cork is that I thought I understood there was some small migration of atmosphere from both sides of the cork over the years.

Maybe it is just an old wine-drinkers tale.

i saw a 1980s video of Hugh Johnson suggesting that you can preserve your label by spraying some hair spray on it.

there's a fun 9-10 part BBC series, each lasting 5-10 minutes on wine 101 presented by Hugh Johnson. you can find it on youtube now.

on a side note: he brought to light the usefulness of stelvin caps even in the 1980s and was not afraid to use it.

IWineAlot,
In response to your original question, an easy solution is to simply store your bottles rotated slightly off center.  For instance, when they are laid down, instead of having the label in the 12 o'clock position, try rotating the bottle so that the label is in the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position.  This way, you're pretty much assured no to scrape your labels on the rack holding, or the rack above, the bottle.

This is a good suggestion.  It is what I do, although I've become more concerned about what's inside the bottle that what's on the outside!
