Thought I'd buy some cheaper wine before they close up.
Gavi di Gavi Ascheri
Accordini Valpolicella Classico 2004
Castillo de Calatrava Gran Reserva 1998
Torres Gran Coronas 2004 Penedes Spain
Chateauneuf du Pape Vignes du Prince 2005
Alter Ego 2004, Margaux
Suspect their sale is going well as wines are disappearig fast.

One word of warning about supermarkets, they aren't traditionalists - no original wooden cases for them.
I received my Alter Ego in 13 separate oversize boxes.
I'd expected to lay a case down and to try the extra bottle - no way!
Had to repackage them into an old 1st Growth case to lay them down - hope I don't forget what's in there and get very disappointed.

Just drank the first Accordini Valpolicella Classico 2004.

It was disgusting:
Cloudy
Awful aroma
Taste of bad sherry.

Decided it was oxidised, and having another 17 bottles decided to take it back to my local Sainsburys (although I had actually bought it on-line from their now defunct wine by the case website).
Started to get suspicious of the 50% off sale!
The customer service girl was very helpful and the CS Manager authorised a cash refund of £8.99.
I pointed out it had only actually cost me £4, but he said that was OK and sorry for the trouble :)
Hooray Sainsburys!  "Surprise and delight your customers" - they did me.
Rushed home and opened a second bottle.
Didn't know whether to be happy, or sad - it tasted just fine (worth quite a bit more than £4 anyway) ;)

  • 2000 Campo Lindo Gran Reserva
  • 2006 Freixenet Cordon Negro

    More Sainsbury half price wines.
Really enjoyed both of these, the sparkler could get away with being Champagne (and for just £5.49).
I will actually buy more of both.
    L.

PS  remember to buy 6 at a time (mixed) for the extra -5% discount.

Sainsburys are selling Campo Viejo cava at 5.50 a bottle - this is now our sparkler of choice in the house.

Excellent acidic and yeasty taste - most people would not be able to choose between this and a champagne.  However, my wallet does.

P.S.  I am not saying that champagne freaks and afficionados will not tell the difference - they will.  My point is that a lot of people wont.
