A vacationer recently returned to his home in Santa Monica to find a thief had made off with more than a dozen works of art by the likes of Piet Mondrian and Jasper Johns, five luxury watches with makers like Patek and Breitling, wine, cash and a red Porsche Carrera.

Police said in a statement Wednesday that the take totals more than $10 million. The burglar struck between Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. and Sept. 13 at 8:00 p.m.

I really want to know what wines were taken...

I can just imagine some cat burglar relaxing in a smoking jacket, drinking a lineup of pilfered '82 Bordeaux, gazing at a Jasper Johns piece, and checking the time on a Patek Phillipe Grand Complication

The former owner and burglar have good taste. I find it interesting that the everything was detailed out except the wine (excluding the cash).

Exactly my thought...not your standard burglary at all. Almost a Thomas Crowne Affair feel

I wonder if anyone checked the victims finances to see if the burglary was possibly fraud? Sounds like a great insurance scam to me!

More detail...and pics of the art, but no details on the wine...

http://www.smdp.com/high-end-art-stolen-in-residential-burglary/111922

quote:

Watches that were stolen include a Glashutte Senator, a Breitling Chronomat OR and a TAG Heuer GT. Some of the watches sell for tens of thousands of dollars. Police did not say which types of wine were stolen.

The paintings include work by Joseph Cornell, one of the most celebrated exponents of assemblage; Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist known for his non-representational form, which he termed Neo-Plasticism; Franz Kline, an abstract impressionist; and Frank Stella, who worked in the areas of minimalism and post-painterly abstraction.

This just makes me even more curious...$2500 average on the bottles if the statement is accurate. Though the "you cant get here in this country" part made me chuckle...

quote:

Among the stolen goods were 40 bottles of wine "that you can't get here in this country," said Santa Monica Police Sgt. Richard Lewis. He put the price tag of the wine alone at $100,000.

Joseph Cornell is one of my favorites.

The artist. I'm not familiar with a Joseph Cornell wine.

Some of the crap that passes for 'art' these days is just ridiculous. Of the 13 images above I would say 5 have artistic merit to me, the others (by BIG names too) are pre-schooler crap.

Then again, I'm a 'poor' computer programmer and not an internationally famous rich artist. So my opinion is worth what you paid for it... which is exactly what I would pay for the 'art' above :)

To me this sounds incredibly bogus. Who has $10mil of random possessions in addition to a mansion, but no alarm or security service?

Sounds more and more like an insurance scam with each successive post. An investment banker, in a melted economy, no alarm,
$10Mil? Seriously?

Or, perhaps his former employer DID receive damages after all!

If he can wait a few minutes, I'm pretty sure I can recreate the Cy Twombly and the Piet Mondrian for him.

...sorry Musedir

He's offering a substantial reward--$1.7M. Maybe to throw off the scent of an insurance scam, but I don't think so as he's specifically broken it down to $1M for the Mondrian and half a mil for the Jasper Johns. He's only put $200K on the table for the car, wine, watches, and other art.

I'd say that this was not the work of a random crackhead jiggling sliders to see if someone left one unlocked. His home was specifically targeted and the thieves knew exactly what they were looking for. My guess is that the majority of it was in an ocean cargo container on it's way to China from Long Beach before he realized it was missing.

Yeah... If real, not good. The story has problems but the lack of security is just troubling. The rest of the stuff sounds equally targeted. A pissed off investor? An insurance scam? Too early to determine...

But just as I can't make wines like a front line winemaker, I could not recreate the artworks despite how simplistic they may appear.

I think it will take both 6L bottles... One for the guards and one for us to get ready to do this job!

Even fairly sophisticated security systems can be easily circumvented by a pro.

If your alarm ever goes off but nothing is missing and it doesn't appear anyone actually entered, consider yourself warned. It was a thief waiting in the shadows to see how long it would take for someone to respond--if anyone responded at all. (Barring gale force winds possibly being the culprit of course.)

I have a friend in the Security Biz.

Everything can be circumvented for a moments in time. Its all about how bad you want the items. A $1.7M lottery ticket is some pretty good motivation for retired investigators.
