How many bottles open at once. - 1/15/2022 11:26:27 AM

Status: offline 		I find myself following five wines at the moment. All are open and thus experiencing different evolutions (some with small amount left in the bottle) others with a glass or two less than full. Was thinking of a comment john glass made about how he follows a few wines over a few days. I have currently:
Terrien 2009 Chardonnay
Rotie southern blend 2009
Rotie northern blend 2010
Chateau thivin 2018
Pira Luigi Barolo marenca 1997

The Barolo is for tonight. Simple pasta with the new American truffles from Burwell farms. The Roties are from their recent library tasting. Both pretty good last night. Curious to see how they are a day later.

So, how many bottles are you nursing at the moment?

Status: offline 		I find most reds degrade over 48 hours, so typically i don't let those linger. Whites can stay fresh and vibrant for several more days IMO. I currently have a 2008 Bordeaux open and a simple Porto. The plan is for Thai food on Sunday, so definitely a white wine with that.

Status: offline 		I mostly drink reds and other than ports and Sauternes I drink within 3 days. I rarely have more than 2 bottles open at once. I did just get my first Coravin so plan to have more bottles “open” at once via Coravin. I’ve decided to mark these in CT as drunk once sampled and I reserved a shelf in my wine fridge for Coravin’d bottles…

It's hard to say cumulatively because I'm still using the original Generation 1 unit so have owned it for many years.

I'm buying non-Coravin cartridges due to the price differential. I'd say that I'm generally getting 4-6 bottles of use per cartridge, and if I had to guess I go through about 1 cartridge/month.

Status: online 		A bottle of cooking red, one of cooking white, one of (cooking) Marsala, a white to spread over a couple of days as aperitif, and maybe a red opened to make a comparison with the red we had at dinner if there was something that appealed

During Covid, we don’t have guests, so the days of verticals at dinner are gone

Indeed not.

Occasionally a third or fourth bottle will be left unfinished to the next day.

Port and dessert wines are exceptions - they sometimes make it out to 4 or 5 days.

I am very similar. Aleats open cooking wines. Sometimes a white multiday drinker. More rsrely a red drinker.

Status: offline 		About half of my wine drinking is via Coravin, and I regularly have 5-6 bottles "open." I have a row in my Eurocave for bottles that I've tapped with the Coravin, but I don't remove them in CT until the bottle is finished.

When I open a whole bottle, it frequently takes 2-3 days to finish, so I will frequently have that float on top of the Coravin number.

Status: offline 		Rarely more than one, almost never more than two. Tonight, I have a bottle of the Drouhin-Laroze 2013 Bonnes Mares (not sensational) and a 2011 Graham VP (excellent) open. I've peaked at around four or five, but more often I would use the Coravin in that situation, pull a glass from each, and then "open" them one by one over the next few weeks (I don't trust the thing for really long term).

This is the way to use Coravin, I agree 100%, and not on older bottles or cheap cork also seems to seap out. I havent used it much lately but KPB has it right.
