What's the most useless wine gadget you've ever bought/received?

I got a corkscrew from a Xmas cracker once that of course snapped on the very first bottle it saw...

wine thermometer, it never saw the action, as I always use my g/f belly button to measure if the wine is ready to be served. I have the bottle touch her belly button and if she jumps - the wine is too cold!

Might be the same as lasat post. Waring Pro wine chiller/warmer.  Put in a bottle.  Dial up the desired temp and press start.  It then warms/chills til done.

Useless.

My parents got received a gift once that we laughed about at the time, and I had forgotten until this post.  You know those engraved pewter liquor bottle "medallions on a chain" that you put around crystal decanters (like you see in the airport limo)?  They got a set of 2 for wine - one was marked Red and the other was marked White.

Weird little statue of a guy that wraps around the bottle neck. Fell off my wine cooler and broke the other night, I'm not in a rush for Jim to glue it back together...

It sounds like it would be nice to keep whites chilled once they are open if you are outside quaffing on a hot summer day. I suppose a bucket of ice would do the same thing...

I like the Waring chiller alot.  It's pretty slow to chill but it's very nice to keep the bottle constant once it reaches temp.

Cooper Cooler™ Rapid Beverage & Wine Chiller

Fill with ice & water, put the bottle in, close the lid & turn it on. It spins & cools the wine.

Exceptionally loud. I would think that putting a wine on "spin" wouldn't be the best thing for it. Plus it tears the **** out of your bottle's label.

I'd call it a "piece o' crap", using the technical term.

I actually like mine.  Don't put a wine bottle on spin, though.  Just takes a little longer to cool, but not much. It is loud, but the idea is not to use it when your guests are there, but in a pinch if you forgot to chill something before they get there.  Takes 5 min. to chill a bottle of wine.

My friend brought me a machete from the Keys, she bought it for $5 to open coconuts.  Wonder how that would do on a bottle neck?

Well, if you don't trust the laws of thermodynamics, the spin-feature is a must.

BTW - regarding loudness - do you know why "things" make sounds? I mean, when a coffee dispenser makes a noise - do you know why? (Apparantly, you have to be in the hydraulics or servo-engine business to know this.)

Roel - what the f*ck is that you have just posted. I am trying to work out what it is - does it measure out a standard pour or does it have another purpose?

There was a big discussion about these on the Chowhound board a while ago.  Questioning whether they were for aeration instead of using a decanter or for measuring.  Some were pro on the aeration question, measuring who needs it other that bars/restaurants.  It might work for aeration in bars where you can't decant.

Yep, I suspect that may have influenced me to buy it.

I started reading Alice more than 60 years ago and still re-read it every now and then.

Oh, come to me my beamish boy...

What we really need is the White Knight, to invent us some more wine gadgets. "It's my own invention."

Ooh, I may need to look for the Vorpal Knife, regardless of whether I ever try sabering a bottle with it. The Alice books are my favorite literary works, and another area that spurs a collective urge.

Paul,

Its supposed to enable you to "decant by the glass". It improves the overall experience of wine drinking by adding oxygen to the wine.
So there you are. To be honest I never tried it; I think it looks a bit silly, especially with guests around the table.

OK, so these are mosly gifts from people who know we are into wine, but for whom it has never occurred that a nice "wine related gift" might be - hmmm - a nice bottle of wine!

But consider yourselves fortunate because as useless as some of these useless wine gadgets are, their numbers and silliness can't compare to the multitude of useless golf-related gifty gadgets out there.  If you are a golfer, I'm sure you know what I mean.  I have a closet full of some of the most ridiculous golf crap one could ever imagine.
