I am blown away. I get he was up and down, but his shows were entertaining. I had heard he was going through divorce though that may just be scuttlebutt. Suicide taking its toll this week. Speechless.

Definitely a loss of a colorful personality. I wasn't a regular viewer/reader, but selectively watched episodes of his various shows.

It's a terrible thing when one's demons become insurmountable, regardless of what they are.

Wow, that's surprising. My wife and I enjoyed his shows, and his slightly sarcastic wit.

Did not watch his shows, but have checked out a few of his books for info. There does seem to be a string of these unfortunate occurrences. Very sad, and so difficult for those left behind.

RIP, and condolences/blessings/comfort to the survivors.

50% rise in suicide among middle-aged white American men in the past 10 years. Something in the zeitgeist is steering too many off the cliff.

I really feel for his kid. I can project from my own intermittent fits of blackness the distorted depressed mindset that allows one to rationalize dropping that sack of life-smashing cold isht on one's child - he must have been in an awful awful place with much cognitive distortion to make that bad of a choice.

What an incredibly selfish thing to do as a parent with an 11 year old child.

You may not be wrong, but this strikes me as exceptionally insensitive and presumptuous, just my opinion of course.

What makes this wine related was that he was on Vashon Island, filming an episode on Seattle and wine. I’m sure he had to have been or scheduled to be at the Andrew Will winery.

It’s just sad.

Depression and this stuff really isn’t a choice. We don’t know if he had some really bad news similar to Robin Williams.

As for myself I’m fine with people checking out on their own much more than visiting the school or the office to bring a few more with them and forcing suicide by coping sure more information will follow in the days to come. I used to talk with his wife via messages and have good friends that know Zamir quite well. Maybe it was all just too much. One of the few journalist foodies to get into Libya before it totally went to hell. I’ll always love his “No Resevations” episode on Emilia-Romana. RIP.

Just sad. Enjoyed his book (Kitchen Confidential) and appreciated his approach to food.

Just an update. He had finished up Seattle and was in Europe. Just tragic.

He seemed like an incredibly nice human being and he offered so much of himself in the expression of his arts- food, cooking, writing and his tv shows.

I feel so bad and so sad that anyone is in that much pain...

This. Those of us who do not suffer from depression are lucky; but it also removes all context to understand what it does to those we love, those we admire.

My favorite quote from him was that “The body is not a temple, it’s an amusement park. Enjoy it while you can. “

I’m waiting to hear more on this but a big loss for humanity. He opened up many minds in the USA, if they were paying attention to reducing xenophobia and enjoying unknown cultures.

I haven't watched his show religiously, but I've enjoyed it when I do. Season 8, Episode 1 with Obama was great with some words of wisdom from leadership that is terribly lacking today.

The Baltimore and Louisiana episodes of NR were terrific (Wire and Treme).
