My brief visit to Napa this week left me pondering this question. Only one choice allowed, and I'm interested to hear others thoughts on this topic. I'm not telling my answer. Yet.

Beverage - but why can't it be a luxurious one?

Obviously it can be, but I'm curious how people weigh it and by giving only one poll choice, your preference would go to the thought which holds more weight.

Luxury item. Water is a beverage. Grapes are a fruit. But some wines are to be found in reduction racks and some wines break the bank.

Beverage. A beverage to be drank with meals. A beverage to be drank after work. A fun adult one, but nonetheless still a beverage - just like soda or iced tea. Not a necessity like water.

It is clearly a beverage. Some wines are luxury items - others just a beverage. And definitely not a necessity like water (although sometimes it does feel like a necessity)

After 8 votes, it's a dead heat, 4-4.

I think I found something we can all agree on.

To me this is a classic case of squares and rectangles. Every square is a rectangle, but not every rectangle is a square.

Every wine is ultimately a beverage (i.e. a consumable liquid). However, I voted for luxury item here because ultimately wine is unnecessary (GASP). In less stark terms than necessary and unnecessary, I think we all might agree that amongst beverages wine is a more expensive item (especially the good ones).

A matter of perspective I suppose, but to me it's a special case square, or luxury item.

Well, best answer is both! Have a glass almost every day (so, a beverage) but spend far too much (so a luxury). I'd have marked both if I could, but chose Luxury in the end (before reading the other responses)

As per Maslow's hierarchy of needs one can survive without decent food, wine and conversation - but what a crappy life it would be,

First a Beverage, even a food in liquid form. Rarely a luxury (compared to volume consumed).

I (ultimately) answered Beverage as I enjoy wine most often with food, and find pairing right wine with right food not much about luxury, but about enjoying necessities, eating and drinking.

Just like coffee and some other beans, it is a necessity.

Yes, definitely a necessity. Since chocolate and coffee are beans, you have half of your daily required amount of 4 servings of fruits and vegetables covered.

Can't it be both? I mean, it's a beverage. But if you splurge, it's obv. a luxury.
