Just a few words to say "Hi" from a new member.

I am now retired and the wife and I are just starting to enjoy wines.

I am setting up a small wine cellar here at home and have started to purchase
some different types of wine to try from our local wine store.

Thanks ~ Rich

Always good to welcome another retiree, or as some might say, a stay at home everyday expert on all, master of none. Wine drinking is a fine hobby. But be careful... a lot of enablers lurk on this Forum!

Rich, what sorts of wines do you drink? And what’s your goal for the cellar?

It is a good group, and we are happy to give you input as you start your journey.
Lot's of great wines out there - but as others mentioned, it can lead you down the rabbit hole....

I purchased a 44 bottle wine rack off Ebay and it arrived yesterday.

It was eazy to put together and I'm thinking about ordering a second one so I have one for Reds and one for my Whites.

Thanks for all the WELCOME posts!

You're gonna need temperature controlled storage...

Wines to drink soon will be fine at room temp, even in the crooked-letter state in summer.

Anything to age, especially higher end wines, should be stored at about 55 degrees. If you really do start considering a temp controlled unit (lots of recs on this board), buy at least twice as big as you think you will need (if you have floor or closet space). It's the advice given almost universally when people ask about storage units. Depending on what you are buying, I doubt you need to go there yet, especially if you are figuring out likes and dislikes. If your local shop has any aged wines, I would recommend trying a few to see if you like them.

Even if your new racks are pretty, I would store the wines in a dark closet; wines hate light, heat and vibration.

Again, welcome. Cran is correct that we will be glad to help you spend all of your retirement money, but it's a wonderful journey with some great people!

Most of us agree that a cool (never gets higher than 65˚), dark (minimal light), and decently humid (50% or better) place is best. If you have an area in your residence that fits the bill, you can consider yourself lucky. If not, start looking into a wine fridge.

*Pro tip: get double the capacity you think you need, because you'll use it in no time.

My New Wine Rack

I also started collecting wine when I retired. I had been drinking wine for decades, but I just bought a few bottles at a time at my local grocery or Costco.

When I started accumulating, I also bought some wine racks which I placed in shelves in the garage. Then some more. Then some more.
But as summer approached, the garage started getting warmer - so I bought a wine cooler from Costco.
When it filled up, I rented some offsite storage.
Then I build a wine cellar.

You may exercise more self control than I did - but this is not an uncommon path.

It's good to start by tasting different wines as recommended by your trusted local wine merchant.
You can then discover which wines you enjoy the most before your start to accumulate inventory for aging.
Holding wine to age creates the requirement for temperature controlled storage.
I would also recommend that you buy in relatively small quantities (2-4 bottles rather than full cases) as your palate will change.

Welcome to the forum. A good group of people who know a lot about stashing wine.

If your room (the one next to the closet) ever gets hot, like 90 degrees (think of times in the mid-summer when nobody is home and the A/C is turned off),that dark closet will get hot too.

Most of us have had bad experiences with wine stored for even short amounts of time above 75 degrees. It starts to taste as if you took it from the bottle, boiled it, and then put it back in. A day or too at temperatures above 80 can already harm the wine.

So a rack in a closet is fine for stuff you plan to drink soon, and if your house somehow never gets hot, might even be ok for keeping bottles for two years. But if you are tempted to spend a little more on the bottles themselves now that you have these racks, you need to figure out how to get the temperature down to 65 or lower. My cellar is at 60, and for that I use an air conditioner that runs from roughly mid April to mid October.

As mentioned, you also would ideally want be a little damp down there. Keeps the corks from drying out.

Quicky note that OP said starting, buy, and try - not collection.

Before even thinking about collecting, I'd highly recommend drinking a bunch of different wines, and reading a little about each type you try. Check in with this group for recommendations. And check in before making major buys if you do decide to collect wines - we can steer you around the nearly inevitable mistakes collectors make early on.

If your in the trying stage, give Barbera a shot. Buy Vietti Barbera d'Alba (not d'Asti) - it has a grasshopper on the label. Given your take on this wine (in many ways it is a good represention of the middle of things) we can then point out wines you'll love.
