One of the things I love about Rioja is that there are many delicious, age-worthy, yet affordable examples. Ill start the suggestions with a classic: R. Lopez de Heredia Gran Reserva Vina Tondonia. Average CT community value of $42.75. Link below...

By definition both Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva have the producer taking care of a lot of upfront aging for you before they can even ship. So many are ready to pop and pour by the time they hit the store. Crianza's are not generally very age worthy - typically should be consumed within 3 to 5 years of vintage, though some may age a little longer. Most Reserva's and Gran Reserva's will age well for at least a decade, if not 2 or 3. So pretty hard to go wrong in either category if you're looking for something to last for a bit (assuming you know the provenance and store them well). Generico (green label) Rioja's are a crap shoot depending on the producer. Some are short/no aging. But there are some rebel Rioja producers that want to be creative in their winemaking, and don't want to be held hostage by the Crianza/Reserva/Gran Reserva classifications. I have bought some very age worthy Generico's like this, but I had awareness of what the winemaker was trying to achieve. Otherwise assume you shouldn't keep a Generico around for more than a year or two.

I've been going down the Spanish Wine rabbit hole lately and I'm in love with 2010 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva, Selección Especial. Another would be the C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Imperial Reserva. You could also go with the Muga Reserva. All of these will give you a more "new world style" as compared to the Tondonia which is more rustic.

I'm glad you mentioned this! La Rioja Alta Vina is one of my favorites too. These are the ones I typically get, not sure if any are age worthy:

MUGA RIOJA RESERVA UNFILTERED, 2015 ( the cheap 20-$25 version)
MARQUES DE RISCAL RIOJA RESERVA, 2014 $22
VINSACRO RIOJA DIORO, 2015, $30 (this is my go to wine)
LA RIOJA ALTA VINA ARDANZA RESERVA, 2010 $38

For me, I like to lay down the wines that are new world in style, fruit forward. These can have a bit of funk that give it a sense of place and I LOVE that about Rioja.

The more rustic wines are better with food and (in my extremely humble, and probably wrong, opinion), I don't look to age them. I like their tannic structure to fight with food.

That said, I think Rioja gives you the ability to pick and choose what you want to do with your bottles based on how you enjoy them.

mmm, Under $50. Muga, Lopez de Heredia's reservas, Cvne? I find that Ygay's reserva (not gran reserva especial as thats hitting $100 now) can go a couple decades.

I personally like the Faustino I. I bought 2 cases of the 2001 and I am to my last 2 bottles. Wish I have more or at least learned that I should wait 15 years to open the first one.

I also like the LAN a mano, RODA I, and Remírez de Ganuza. On a side note and as strange as it reads , if you come to Mexico and go to a wine shop or supermarket 80% of the wine you will see is from Spain. By far the wine that most people consume here for everyday consumption is Spanish wine folllowed by Argentinian wine ( mostly because its cheap). When I go out to a party I am always sure 90% of the time they will be serving Spanish wine. Weddings is a different matter, here you wull always find Mexicac wines either from Valle de Guadalupe or Parras.

Good luck trying to find Tondonia Gran Reserva anywhere, let alone one at $42!

This linked to a wine that doesn't exist; the current GR vintage is 1995 I think.
I'm sure the OP referred to the Reserva, which is featured (also mistakely) in the image from the linked GR.

Assuming the conversation is focused on Tinto:

As much as I adore LdH and believe that Tondonia is still good value considering the quality, I'm convinced the best bang for the buck in all of Rioja is Marques de Riscal. The current 2014 is Reserva is delicious ($22 retail) and I recently drank an '81 Crianza (yes, you read that right) that was not only still alive, but enjoyable. Off the charts QPR and made in a traditional style, much like LdH, that I quite like.

Do they age well? They are only $15 on Vivino.

If 39 years old is too early to say whether it ages well there is a favorable CellarTracker tasting note for the crianza at 47 years of age (the 1970).

So drinking my FF10 bottle in the early 70's counts as a mistake?!

Wine library carries the 2007 reserve but I feel it's too hot to have it shipped to VA right now.

One value Rioja wine that hasn't been mentioned yet but is age-worthy and classic is Faustino I Gran Reserva. If you can get past the weird gray bottle, you instantly get a lot of notes of aged Rioja/Bordeaux and it will last another 5-10 years. I remember finding 13+ year old bottles of this on sale for $12 in Geneva while it goes for about $25 in the US.

Oops. Sorry. Anyway, I second Faustino I as an option and I'm surprised at some of the prices being mentioned for it. I see several for $25-30 in the US on wine-searcher and I always saw it for $20 or less in Europe.

I had a chance to try Muga, Finca Ygay and marques de riscal side by side. All 3 were fantastic given the price. Personally I like the Ygay the most. For some reasons it reminds me of Musar it doesn't have the funkiness to it but maybe it's the blend. The finish on Muga is hot so I feel that one would probably benefit from a few years in the bootle. I'm new to this hobby so my assessment it probably dead wrong!

+1 One for the great bargains in wine today. Another +1 for La Rioja Alta, esp the 904 Riserva.

Valbuena costs around $125, LAN a mano $45, Remirez de Ganuza $80 ( I am nut sure about this one, saw it a month ago at costco).

Which one from LAN do you recommend? I'm not familiar with this producer.
These are the one I could find locally:

Lan Edicion Limitada Rioja, $41
Lan Rioja Gran Reserva, $23
Lan Reserva, $18
Lan Extreme Crianza Rioja, $19

I like the Edición Limitada, I think it also says " LAN a mano" below the name. This is not your classic super old world Rioja, it is definitely a more modern aproach. One other wine that is not a Rioja that it is extremely cheap ( incredible QPR !!!) is the Juan Gil Jumilla ( monastrel grape). This wine have always killed when doing blind tastings...always. I don´t remember very well the price but is something like $12. It is a very delicious wine that will be very popular with new world fans and I think also with the old world fans, although the later can have better options because the Juan Gil is not austere or barn happy.

You can´t go wrong with LAN, they are good wines for the money.
