I'm down to just a couple of Dönnhoffs in my cellar so this offering from Vinopolis seemed interesting.
I like them, but I don't really understand the difference between all these wines.
I would welcome comments and recommendations from CT members more versed in rieslings.

Thanks in advance
ben

Hi

So trocken and grosses gewachs are dry wines.

Kabinett, spatlese and auslese get sweeter and less alcoholic in that order. Auslese may even have a touch of noble rot.

For me, grosses gewachs is best for dry and then kabinett or spatlese for richer, more apricot and peachy flavours with good acidity. Auslese makes a great aperitif...

Hope that helps a little

Donnhoff is terrible. Don't buy any of those wines.

Really?

I bought a half dozen last fall and have consumed 4 of them. I rather liked them.

Do you enjoy Rieslings, if so, what winery would you recommend?

I'm just trying to learn.

I love Riesling. Donnhoff is a favorite. But if people start buying it, prices will go up. So...

[EDIT: I'm also starting to realize that it's hard to convey sarcasm in text form: my sarcastic "Don't buy Donnhoff" clearly didn't come off as such! Apologies for confusion.]

I like the Neiderhauser vineyard best, but age them. I like Oberhauser a lot too and it drinks well young. Spatlese is great stuff. Some of their Kabinett is declassified in some years so it can be sweeter and other times quite dry. Kabinett should be the best wine from the vineyard, but usually it isn't though I tend to like them a lot. It takes a very deft hand at making a drier/dry white because it is so easy to see the flaws with no sweetness to hid behind. Its why GG usually are so pricy, and bone dry but beautiful.

If you like dessert wines the Auslese is fantastic and the sweet factor blends in with aging, not that the calories go away.

Just my $0.02

You did recommend my last purchase, and everyone I shared them with enjoyed them.

OK - order going in. 6 GG, 2 Kab, and 4 Spatlese. (8 different wines)
Many of these will get some slumber time.
I may just need to buy a case every fall.
