Who is accepting the 2020’s from Promontory & Harlan? And if you’ve told them no, what has their response been?

I just got my email that they’re about to bill me for my allocation of Promontory. I know they harvested early, but that’s quite a leap of faith on a poor vintage at that price point. (800/bottle)

On Vinous, Harlan was Antonio’s top wine for 2020. But he found Promontory light and unexciting.

Dunnuck, who I tend to most agree with, gave Promontory 95pts, but said it lacked vibrancy of a great vintage. He also said Harlan was the wine of the vintage.

Tough decision! But for what it’s worth, you can probably just email Promontory and say that you bought heavily in 2019 assuming 2020 wouldn’t release a wine, so won’t be ordering — but that you do wish to stay on the list.

This was a tough call. I saw they increased the price to $800 a bottle and I felt the tasting notes weren't as unique as other years. Both Antonio and Dunnuck mentioned lacking depth. Normally I do pick up 3 Promontory and 3 Penultimates, but decided to stop the Penultimate allocation this year and add more from Vice Versa with Philippe Melka.

Have been tasting more Burgundy lately and I recently picked up more PYCM...Chassagne Montrachet 1er, etc. Love that ****. lol

People here whined and whined about $600 for a 100 pt Scarecrow a few weeks ago.

Interesting that quite a few of us own a fair number of “those” bottles, but rarely post about them.

Actually thats not totally correct, I dont care about spending the $600, but in reality it was more like $2100 as I had to buy a 3 pack and on top tax and shipping. If I could buy a single bottle from them I would and have it for a special ocasion. It would be great that those very expensive bottles can be bought as single bottles and not as a pack.

Maybe we need a little thread for people who want to go in for a three pack jointly?

Unfortunately all of my Promontory & Scarecrow are too young to enjoy now, knowing their potential at 10+ years. I also wish the community of folks who invest in these wines would be open to discussing them more.

Interestingly, I was at Promontory in March and they poured the 2011 for us. I was actually very impressed. It was a terrible vintage for Napa, but Promontory made a wine that still feels young and vibrant. There was ripe fruit, but the wine felt more like an old world style Bordeaux than Napa. I wanted to try the 2020, but the weren’t pouring it. We had ‘11 and ‘21 and ‘18 Penultimate.

Speaking of 3 packs, Promontory was happy to sell me singles of Penultimate. I have an ‘18 and ‘19. Vice Versa let me do the same with The Magnificent Seven. Sometimes you just have to ask about buying a single bottle. Doesn’t work with everyone, but it works with some.
