Tonight for the first time we are tasting a Grange 1982 to celebrate an anniversary. Started the weekend with a 1990 Opus 1. Still a very nice wine but was a bit tired. Stay tuned for more on the Grange. For dessert will be enjoying a 2003 Királyudvar Tokaji Cuvée Ilona.

Howell, didn't you have the Baumard QdC a few weeks back? What did you think?

Bottle must have been bad or over the hill. Nothing to write home about.

Very odd...

Baumard QdC can be an exceptionally beautiful desert wine with a few years on it. the Clos de Saint Catherine, which I believe is like a "second" label wine, is equally nice. Bought some for $22 once and have been kicking myself ever since that I didn't back up the truck on that...

Heard that the vintage of the QDC we had was not one of their better ones.

Just had 2 great bottles:

82 Grange
Our first Grange ever. Serving with Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb and Mushroom-ala-Sauvignon Blanc. First of 4 bottles acquired in the late 80's. Choose 82, over 81 and 83 after researching. Beautiful royal garnet. Fiery red as the light goes through it. Slightest amount of bricking. Nose opens with stewed red berries, leather, earth, tar, coffee, spice, herbs and the familiar cassis scent found in mature Bordeaux. Nose is almost like a cross between a great mature Bordeaux and a mature Amarone. No way this tastes 30 years old. Comes into the mouth bursting with exotic spicy and smokey cooked fruit flavors. Lots of spicy dark fruit, cassis, cedar in the mid palette. Wonderful balance. Spicy and ever so slightly astringent finish cleanses the palette with coffee beans and cinnamon spice, leaving you wanting more. Lived up to the reputation. Would sing Waltzing Matilda for more. World class wine.

2003 Királyudvar Tokaji Cuvée Ilona (Hungary, Hegyalja, Tokaji) 92

Medium gold amber color. Nose opens with with honey, pineapple and peach. The nose has the familiar botrytis signature. Incredibly well balanced. Rich with flavors that include honey, apricot, peach, cooked raisins and the essence of an almond/orange liquor if it exists. Very refreshing finish. At 9 years this wine is drinking wonderfully and I believe it will still continue to evolve. Looking forward to day 2.

A really wonderful re-presentation of your tasting experience.

Nice notes niyndallas.
82 Grange sounds great. One question: Was it a little "malty"?
Another question: What anniversary were you celebrating?
Keep them anniversaries a coming...

Did not detect malt. But the finish had cinnamon or clove. It was bottle # 2 of the evening.
Celebrating 1 year anniversary living together. Was married 6 months later. Thanks
